Happy Friday everyone.  This morning was a feeble attempt at TR's "Goddard" workout, a bunch of 30" sprints (which went fine), then 2 x 6' in the sweet spot (which didn't go so well).

Got off the bike and did the "plank ladder", which is basically 7 minutes of hell.

We're going to see a couple of 'turn your brain off" kids' movies this weekend - Cars 3 and Captain Underpants.  Of course we're going to see them for my daughter.  Uh-huh.

We got in two movies this weekend - quick reviews (no spoilers...):

Wonder Woman:  emotionally and visually intense...great flick

Captain Underpants:  uh, I don't think "horrible" is a negative-enough term for this disaster

Speaking about "good" movies, went this weekend with my teenage daughter and friends to see "Baywatch", how about that?

John, let me know if you are near by Spain!

This tapering week in Brussels for work, so not much to do apart from work - wednesday planned a 3600m swim and short run, and not much more till Sunday. Reading Steinberg's book about IMArizona to get that extra motivation these last few days. Absolutely convinced that I am undertrained, but guess this is the feeling most of us amateurs have the previous days.....

Juan

Gretchen, just be sure you can link via Bluetooth. The 920 does not use ANT+. I specifically asked Garmin this when trying to get set up with Zwift when Zwift was in its infancy - when it required ant+. I didn't have a power meter at that time, just speed and cadence sensor and my 920. It was a no-go because my 920 was not ant+.

45/15 brick followed by some yoga this morning. Doing a few errands and then some ST this afternoon. I'm really trying to commit to strength training this summer. I love doing it, but it is always the first thing to go when sbr ramps up.

1700m of suffering with the masters team this morning. It really didn't feel good--like I've forgotten how to swim! Hoping to have my first ride with a power meter later this afternoon. My bike is at the lbs right now getting the power tap hub installed.

My 920 XT uses ANT+.  It reads my Powertap, GSC-10 speed/cadence thingy, and all of my ANT+ HR straps.

Picked up my bike with new to me power meter installed today. It does work with my 920, but the next upgrade (assuming I like training with power) will certainly be a bike computer! Looking down at my watch all the time was crap.

FTP test today provided hard data to demonstrate my solid BOP cycling skills. I can only go up from here! Looking forward to seeing how this tool can help me improve!

I can't tell you how humbled I was when going from Trainer Road virtual power to a power meter.  It was like a 15% drop.

For a bike computer, you could probably pick up a Garmin Edge 500 or 800 pretty cheap.  They don't have all the new bells and whistles the more recent models do, but if you just want to record your rides and view data along the way, they're just fine.

Juan - I'm sure you're not under trained. I'm also sure nothing will ever convince you of that until the day!! We're all the same in some ways! You'll be fine, the work is in, enjoy the taper.

Oops, shut my mouth on the ant+ then, I was just going off what Garmin told me. I've never been able to do anything ant+, only Bluetooth. I must have had a misinformed rep.

Hi Everyone, long time no see...

Well if you look at my training log, you'll see I've become a sloth. Only 3 runs, for an hour and a quarter so far in the whole month.

But there is a good reason for that, on Wednesday the 7th, my wife and I had a routine appointment with the obstetrician to start the final planning for the arrival of our baby, unfortunately (or fourtunately as it was found) my wifes blood pressure had spiked very, very high, so my wife got a ride in an ambulance, and we were sent off to hospital. Long story short she was diagnosed with preeclampsyia, and the next day (about 3 weeks early) gave birth to our new baby boy Oscar via cesarean.

There have been a few complications caused by the preeclamsyia, and the c-section and she and Oscar were in hospital for almost 2 weeks, and unfortunately a visit back at the start of week 3. Baby has been healthy as a horse, the problems have been with mum.

The good news is things seem to be settling down, we're all at home and settling into our new life, and mum is expected to make a full recovery over the next few months.

It's been a wonderful, but very hard few weeks on all of us, and understandably my mind has been elsewhere. But like I said, we're home now, safe and sound, and starting to get into some sort of routine. So I'm looking forward to getting back into some kind of training as part of that routine. Only running in my immediate future, and only short runs spread around feeding and sleeping times. Hopefully by the end of the year I'll be feeling in some sort of shape to have a go at a half marathon, and next summer I'm hoping to be back doing 1 or 2 sprint tris.

Until then I'll have to live vicariously through you guys.

Hope all is well, and hope to be around more again.

P.S. as for the beer drinkers appreciation side of it, sometimes beer just doesn't cut it, so Oscar was celebrated with a bottle of Mt Gay Extra Old rum... very nice.

Congratulations, Andrew. Sorry to hear of all the complications, but really glad everything has worked out for your family. Becoming a dad is such an incredible, life-altering event. Enjoy every minute of it - we'll still be here. :-)

Go Juan!!!

Up this morning at 5 for a 1:15 run followed by a 1:00 spin on the bike. It was ugly in a lot of ways, but it is done. Afterwards we went a couple hours north to have lunch with my in laws. It was a birthday lunch for me, belated. Fun and I tried four different beers. Unfortunately, I can't remember the names of any of them! Oh well...someday I'll get to try them for the first time again. They were all worth drinking.

Congrats Andrew!! Sorry it didn't go as smooth as hoped but the important thing is everyone is good now.

Four weeks from today is my race. Tomorrow is what I'm calling my "race rehearsal" workout. It will be a one hour swim, 100 mile ride, one hour run (jog/shuffle/crawl!?).

Should take me about ten hours with transitions and whatnot. One last chance to dial in nutrition and truly get mentally ready for race day.

Hope everyone's weekends are going well!

I completely forgot yesterday to wish Juan luck. I'm pretty sure today is the big day! I'd follow along Juan but will be quite busy! Haha. Will have to check back later on.

Hope it goes great for you!
