Out of curiosity, do you incorporate walking into your run training? (Long course). Many of those i know who have completed 70.3s/140.6, have told me they did a 'fair ' amount of walking during the run portion for various reasons. Some ultra marathon runnersiI've spoken with have told me they walk during their ultras and therefore train accordingly with power walking. Maybe this is mainly for c ompleters ? (I fall into this category ). Thoughts? Opinions?

For IM Boulder I walked through all of the aid stations (I did about a 4:30) on the marathon. I regularly train with a 5 minute run to 1 minute rest while training. Walking is even more common in ultra. I'm training for an ultra right now and today I "ran" 36 miles, although I would guess that I probably walked close to 8 of those.

I don't walk during training but I do walk through aid stations...always...even in half marathons I PR in. Walking is a very sensible training/racing strategy though. If you plan to walk, then train that way. Don't just go walk 20 miles though, have a plan. Something like: run 9 minutes, walk 1 and be very strict about it. Don't use it as an excuse to dog your runs but make it sensible for yourself on what you think you can do.

I train walking

Sometimes as part of my runs: as either run walks or sometime as adding 2 or 3 mile walk on the end of a run

Also I may do a specific walk session 6-10mile cross country walk

The reason I do this

There may be times in an IM you find yourself walking - fatigue, gastric problems, aid stations, injury etc ... but the key is to be able to walk quick.

Last year (IM Maastrickt) i was chatting to a fellow competitor - he was running, I was walking ... at the end of our chat I walked away from him

If you incorporate walking in your training ... give it purpose ... being able to walk at 7kph will give you a 6hr marathon on the end of an IM ... and there are a lot of people run it slower than that

I don't walk in my training.

I walk through each aid station and incorporated a run/walk system after mile 18. I'm a middle of the pack guy on the long courses.

If I pull a calf muscle or something I will walk up to 20 miles a week while recovering, broken colar bone, stitches in the ankle, what have you.

For actual training and racing, run straight through unless something bad happens during an IM, such as back muscle spasm that doesn't go away or leg muscle issue. At 50 that happens sometimes. May slow me down but I will finish 8).

I didn't walk in my training. In HIM I walk up the hills and run the rest. I have only done one sort-of-IM (the bike was shortened to 56 miles due to flooding). In that one, I planned on a run:walk 4:1 min, but I didn't stick with it. I just ran without taking breaks for the first several miles, and I am pretty sure that I paid the price in the end.
