Subject: Can I get ready for IM in 12 months
It has been 4 years since I did my last HIM race. I had kept up my running up until a year ago when I had an ankle injury that kept me from running for 6 months. I am slowly getting back into running and up to 4 miles with no major issues. My husband just finished his 2nd IM Texas and now I want to get mine in the books. I am considering IM Texas 2018 but that only gives me a year to get from zero to 140.6. Is this possible? I am not completely out of shape but certainly don't have a strong base to work from. Any advice would be so appreciated! Thanks!

I am no expert by any definition, but I would think that someone with HIM training experience (even 4 years ago) could do an IM with 6 month base build followed by a 6 month training plan. Good luck!

It is possible but not highly advisable.  It would probably be better to target getting back to a HIM next year and plan on 2019.

I agree with Andy in the above post. I don't see why it would be an issue. I don't see why you would need to train for a HIM or OLY, though they would make great practice during the IM training.

You've done a HIM even though it's been a few years. I personally believe you could start training and be ready in 6-7 months. Get a good plan or a good coach and stick with it.

HIMs and Olys are crappy practices for IMs.  Training for them can, however, be very useful in getting yourself ready to prep for an IM.  I'd definitely try to train for some shorter races later this summer if you have an IM goal anytime in the next couple years.  It's not mandatory, but intermediate goals can be very helpful.

You've done some HIM in the past and watched your husband do his IMs, so you have a rough idea what you are in for in aiming for the IM next year.

I think most people can "finish" an IM if they put in the training hours over 12 months. If your only goal is to cross the finish line under 17 hours, I think you will be fine. I agree that racing a 70.3 does not do much for your training of an IM, but it is helpful in assessing your fitness.

Shoot for a 70.3 12 weeks out IMO. This will give you 1 week of recovery, and then 10 strong weeks of increasing your training distances at each discipline, work on nutrition, and a final week of taper.

If you want to be somewhat competitive and get into the "Middle of the Pack," focus on 70.3s this year and do an IM in 2019 or late 2018. 12 months of training after being off for 4 years is not enough to be competitive.

I suppose it all depends on your motivation & desires.

Good luck.

Yes

as long as you are willing to commit to it.

I know plenty of people who have done exactly that .. some of whom you would have thought they'd struggle to walk up a hill when they started on the journey.

6-7 months training to train

then a specific IM training programme

look at the beginners get round plan on here ... it gives guidlines of where you should be at when you start the plan - and its a good 1st timer plan

Yep, it's possible! Biggest thing would be to ramp up slowly especially on the run to prevent injury, but at least you've been keeping up with running so you should be good!

I completed my first IM last week. I ran my first HIM a year earlier, and in the past year I have completed three HIMs along with two marathons.

Outside of the HIM and marathon distances, the longest bike ride I ever did in training was 40 miles. The longest run was 10 miles. And the longest swim was 100 lengths in the pool.

In my full IM I never felt tired on the swim, I had enough energy to push the end of the bike ride, and I only walked about six miles of the run portion. I finished in just over 13:30, which includes about a 30-minute break to help a fellow biker at the special-needs portion of the bike.

One year is PLENTY of time to prep for a full. I'm providing you evidence that you don't have to do 80-mile bike rides or 20-mile runs to prep, either.
