The night before I had just flown back in from a hiking trip in Colorado. I was pretty exhausted and wasn't sure how my performance would be impacted.

Felt pretty good on this one, was pushing the pace for the most part. At the turn around I realized I was somehow in 1st place!! What?! On the way back a guy passed me, but I just told myself to not go crazy, keep him close, and see if you can run him down.

Gained a few seconds on the leader here, always helpful

Comments:

I could see the leader in transition, so I knew I wasn't too far behind. I tried to keep the pace consistent so I didn't spend all my energy early on. Going through the cave was fun, because at that point I was getting pretty close to him, and I didn't want to slow down. I ended up tripping on a rock in the darkness, and bit the dust. Luckily I was able to sort of roll out of it without costing myself too much time. The bloodied knees made for some fun post race questions and pictures. I ended up catching the leader after the turn around, but also realized there were 2 other guys coming for me, fast. This is where my exhaustion came into play. I wanted to win so bad, but I just couldn't summon another level to hold them off. I really tried, but the legs just weren't responding. They both passed me, and I couldn't do anything about it. The top three ended up being separated by just 13 seconds. I was disappointed, but 3rd overall ain't too shabby!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, gave it my all.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung around and chatted with Leigh and the kids. I helped Evie get set up for his first triathlon ever with the Open. She wanted me to run with her on the bike, which proved to be quite a challenge because she was FLYING. I think I ran faster doing that than I did during my race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Exhaustion from the hiking trip and traveling the previous day.

Event comments:

Really liked this location for the HITS race, 100X better than Kingston last year. Hopefully they keep it here in the future.
