Subject: HIM during Marathon Training
Good afternoon all,
I apologize in advance because I'm sure this has been covered before. My plan this year originally was to do my HIM in July (Muncie, already signed up and ready to go), and then switch over to marathon training a couple weeks later for a race in early November. My question is this - I was looking at another HIM in September (Augusta) and thought I might sign up since I could still be in shape and this might be my last year of tri for a while (starting a family). Can you all offer any advice or thoughts on keeping in tri shape while marathon training? Is it too much to do all at once?

Thanks in advance!

You can train for both but you're gonna have to weigh in which race is more important to you. Marathon training requires lotsa running miles and you might need to sacrifice some swimming and biking to fully prepare for it.

I think a lot of what you are asking for depends on your history in each of the three disciplines. If you want to just complete, then 'I' say go for it. If in, one or both, you want to compete or shoot for a PR, then it completely changes the game. Best of luck!

I'm in a similar boat, with the intention to take a crack at my first marathon in the fall, and am doing a HIM at the beginning of July.  I already know that I can't balance both full time tri training and marathon training, so I'll really focus on the run after the beginning of July and just have some fun with Olympics/Sprints for the remainder of Tri season.  Admittedly life doesn't allow as much training as it once did and I'm keen not to miss any runs at the moment while both biking and running are already way behind where they should be.

This will be my second marathon, but also my second HIM. I really want to break four hours in the marathon, but I would also like to try and pr the HIM in July and compete to possibly break that in September. I think I would give up some swimming and keep biking at least two days a week. Just thinking out loud.

Only you know your true fitness level as to whether you can do all of these events this close together, but if you are asking strangers on a forum you may have some doubts.

IMHO, I would pick one event that really matters to you and concentrate on the workout plan that will get you to that starting line ready to do your best. Doing a sub 4 hour marathon takes a focused effort over a 6 month time or at least it did for me. I started at 30 miles per week and built to 50 miles per week. I completed a 3:47 marathon relatively easily and most important injury free. Previously I tired to hurry the process and ended up injured and had to take time off to recover. It takes time for your body to adapt to running that far.

I have also done 5 HIM events. I found that you really needed to focus on the swimming (especially technique) and getting plenty of time in the saddle on the bike, otherwise the half marathon was as real struggle even though I thought I was in good running shape.

I consider these activities as something you can do for a life time, so enjoy the journey and don't get in a hurry try to do too many events close together. I figure there is next year to try another event. By planning the preparation each event is more enjoyable.
