I know I should not have to remove the lower fin to get the rear wheel off, but the tire wedges into it and derailleur and will not let it drop. What am I doing wrong?

Go small/small on your chainring and cog, remove air from the tire, and remove the skewer. This should get you enough clearance to pull the chain over the cog and slip the wheel out.

With you at the back of the bike, grab the back of the RD and rotate it towards you body. Also be in the small small. This should give you all the clearance you need to get the wheel in and out.
