Total Time = 2h 52m 41s
Overall Rank = 298/957
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 35/74
Pre-race routine:

woke up ate, 1 pc toast w/ peanut butter, 1 banana, small cup of coffee. check all of my gear and rode my bike to the race +/- 3 miles.
Event warmup:

Bike ride to transition, light stretching, swam 50 yards or so before by wave start.
Swim
  • 30m 46s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

swim went well, I completed and started my first/second lap right as the next wave started which was unfortunate due to extra traffic jostling around. I felt really calm, actually could have pushed harder. The kelp did not bother me although I did get stuck in a large patch of it on the first lap. :)
What would you do differently?:

I would push it a little more
Transition 1
  • 04m 33s
Comments:

I though I was moving fairly fast, I need to work on this for sure
What would you do differently?:

bring less stuff, steamline everything
Bike
  • 1h 17m 38s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.21 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall I was on my target time. I got a cramp in my mid back on the third lap that really put me off of my pace.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more water, find a energy drink /gel that does not make me feel like I am going to throw it back up or give me gas. Also I need to ride more!
Transition 2
  • 04m 22s
Comments:

SLOW, shoot I really stunk in the transitions! I also had to make a trip to the bathroom on the way out to the run.
What would you do differently?:

move faster,
Run
  • 55m 22s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

I fell apart. I had been shooting for 8 min miles. I was so thirsty but I could not drink anything without feeling like I was going to throw up. I just had nothing left. The hill and the return end of the laps were brutal, definately harder than slight inclines.
What would you do differently?:

Run more, run longer, run faster
Post race
Warm down:

high fives, light stretching, drinking water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I had trouble with my hydration and fuel intake, definately limited my speed. Also this was my first race at this distance

Event comments:

no water on the bike course kinda stunk. Overall it was a great race that was very organized and well run.

bring less stuff, steamline everything
... it usually takes folks a long time to figure out the secret you cite above: the less you have to pick through/put on/move around, the less time it takes to get out of the transition.

Congratulations on the finish - and with some nice splits.

Couple of outside observations to consider: not all cramping issues are borne from dehydration, some are due to muscle fatigue/imbalances ... or a mixture of the two (as one can feed off the other). Your mid-back cramp may be that your back was feeling the stress of you being bent over your handle bars pushing as hard as you did during the race.  This can be rectified by more time in the saddle, doing interval sprints and/or weight lifting that focuses on all of your back (lower, mid + shoulders).  (October's Triathlete magazine has an article about cramping that is particularly well done.)

That said, your run may have been slower due to dehydration ... which is linked with the "these sports supplements make me want to hurl" situation.   There is an article on the front page of this site that discusses sports drink hydration that may provide some insight on how to work through this issue.

Good race ... and here's to good training through the upcoming off season.
