Subject: Sprint Tri vs a Quick Brick workout 1 week before race
My workout plan has me doing a Fast/quick Brick workout 8 days before my Chicago Tri. However, there is a local sprint tri the Same day I'm supposed to brick. The workouts are pretty similar time/distance to a sprint except my training plan has a little more of an interval/fartleck structure instead of a full redline type zone 4/5 race zone I would do in the race. The race plan has a lot of rest the week before. I would prefer to "race" but my main goal is try to place in the charity wave at Chicago, I have a few friends that I really want to beat. Should I race or stay on plan?

First consideration - are you okay if you get injured at the sprint and can't race the following weekend?

If yes, second consideration - are you fit enough? When I was in shape, sprints or oly's were fine on consecutive weekends with some solid training between. Now, I'd probably be still crying on the couch the Wednesday after a sprint.

I would be pissed if I got hurt but honestly the only way I see that happening is a fall on the bike which is probably just as likely as a road ride. I feel fit enough. The last sprint tri I did I went for a 50 mile bike the next day. A little slow but good endurance.

You answered your question

Are you doing the sprint or oly?

What's your last 3 or 4 weeks looked like (training load - in hours)?

Unless you are doing a hard group ride with inexperienced riders (or you are inexperienced), I would guess that your chance of crashing in a race is considerably higher than just riding on the road.

Not that it should prevent you from racing, just something to keep in mind, especially for a low priority race.

Last weekend was my peak, ~3 hr ride Saturday then a 2hr run Sunday, this weekend 1 hr easy run Saturday, test ride Sunday (~20mile TT), Next weekend brick Saturday (race simulation warm up/30km bike; 7k run/cool down), Sunday 1 hr recovery run; 40min easy swim. Then the last weekend would be a short brick 1 hr total at race pace (or sprint tri?) and off Sunday. That rounds out my training.

Is your race a sprint or an olympic distance?

5 hours/wk is your peak?

I'd skip the preliminary race.

That's only the weekend workouts. I still have another 6-7 hrs of training mon-fri of a variety of tempo, speed, recovery. My training logs are pretty up to date for the last few weeks since I export directly from my garmin.

Well here's the deal.  Your hour brick in your training plan says to do the brick at race pace.  Doing a sprint triathlon at full effort, like it sounds like you are talking about, is NOT race pace for an Olympic distance triathlon.  They are paced differently. (yes, there are people who will tell you that a sprint is not paced at all and they don't know what they are talking about)  Your plan wants you to do what you feel your race pace will be for your Oly race, for an hour.....good plan for where you are in your triathlon "career".  It doesn't want you to race a sprint for an hour......2 different animals.

If I remember right you have decent potential but haven't been doing triathlon very long.  The plan you are following seems to have served you well up to this point...I'd stick with the plan.....especially if you want optimum performance for your Oly.

I agree, a bike mishap is far more likely in a sprint than a training ride.

Mount and dismount around transition can produce a lot of carnage.  The stress of the clock plus a lot of inexperienced athletes.  A bike wreck, even a low-speed tip-over, can do damage to you, the bike, or both that may be hard to repair in the week leading up to your main race.
