Subject: Gift for Virgin IM'er

One of my best mates is doing his first IM, Florida.  He's pretty well set up, but I'd like to get him something to help him along in the race.  I know everyone is different, but is there anything you wish you had, are glad you had, saw someone else have, that would make a good gift for the first IM?

He already has a Kuota Kalibur

My coworkers got me a basket full of stuff. Magazines, beer, brownies, cashews, beer, ADVIL, slippers, beer, and a tshirt that had their faces on it. It was really cool because I hadn't expected it.

Yeah, I know.  It's actually a pretty good suggestion.  Have to find a masseuse in Clearwater (?that where IMFL is?)

I like the basket thing too.....

Good question, I'd say up to $100.  Over that, I could get some friends to chip in as well

Are you friends with his SO or friends going with him? If so, having one of them pick up a jersey or tri top from the expo would be a great idea.

I like the massage idea for when he returns home as well.

I met a guy at a tri shop that bc of injury he couldnt do IMLP with his co-worker. They had planned for it and trained for 7 months together so he wanted to get him a gift for his first Ironman and to wish him luck and all that stuff. He went with an aero helmet, the rudy project one, i think its called the syton??? Its a little more than you wanted to spend but IMFL is flat as a pancake where that may come in handy and save a little time.

I think this would be very unexpected, a massage is nice but he probably has that planned already since he is doing an ironman and probably has an idea of how his body is going to feel.

A goody basket is a good idea.

Or anything with the M Dot logo on it- I'm sure they'll have some nice apparel at the expo.  And from what I hear, you can never have too much IM apparrel

A massage woudln't be a bad idea either since it's really practical!

Or you could always get his friends/family to submit letters or cards of encouragement and give them to him the day/night before the race- I think that would be awesome to go along with the gift!

I'm sure no latter what you decide on he'll appreciate it!

There are companies like Crossing the Line that make nice finisher's plaques and custom framed photos.  There is also a plethora o' finisher gear you could order from EventStores.com.

Collect as much as you possibly can from race day i.e., banners, brochures, his race #, photos, his medal, maps of the course, print out his final results, etc...and have all of these items professionally framed for him to hang on his wall to show off his accomplishments. Sometimes when we do it ourselves it looks like we're bragging, but when someone else gives it to you as a gift...you are proud to hang it :-) This way he can always look back and remember his first IM :-)

Otherwise, I would say 'you' being at the race and following him all day/night long around the course would be the best gift ever a friend could give :-)
