I'm trying different nutritional things as I'm training for my first half ironman. Today I brought along trail mix (nuts, raisins, smarties) and I really liked munching on it. I'm wondering thought whether it's going to give my body any fuel during the actual race. Doesn't it take a long time to digest the proteins in the nuts? Would there be enough time to extract the calories during a race?
I'll eat trail mix on long rides. For me, I need some solid food in addition to tailwind on rides longer than 3-4 hrs and trail mix seems to work well. I can eat it while on the bike and the added salt and sugar helps with cramping in addition to the energy boost.
The other thing I'll eat is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that I can put in my jersey pocket.

In an HIM for me, the nuts would be too filling & slow acting. Still racing with at least a moderate effort to near hard. Raisins might cause some GI issues too. I also tend to prefer something easier to grab, i.e. not in little pieces.
For an easier long or all day thing, then it might work great. People vary a lot with nutrition tolerances, so YMMV.
It's worth a try, but for most people, it wouldn't be the best. There's too much protein and fat, and not enough simple carbohydrates in it. This makes it a little more difficult to digest, increasing the chances of having GI issues.
