Comments: Managed this to plan, had plenty of hydration, and was doing fine, given the conditions. Had a nasty bout of tendonitis in left ankle after walking up a short rocky climb at mile 20...wasn't sure I could continue after trying to walk it off, but nursed it along for a couple miles and it eased up enough to assure me I'd at least finish the 50K course segment of the 50 miles. Between the high temperatures, the ankle, and my back stiffening up gradually, it was evident that trying to finish would be foolhardy. The heat finally started to get to me as I walked a climb at 29 miles and that decided the matter--I decided to drop officially after 50K, but not to take a 50K finish time (which was an option for 50 milers). Checked in with the RD after crossing the 50K timing mat and told her to please not show me with a 50K finish...would do a mile or two on the 2nd loop of the 50 mile course, then come back to the finish and drop officially. Ended up doing the 50K course plus out-and-back on the next loop for a total of 2 km...so I'm calling it "52K" for the day (Garmin 910XT had it as 32.1 miles). Marathon split was 5:06. Time at 50K course finish was 6:07 (PR from Nov 2016 is 5:06). Dropped at 32.1 miles (5623' of climbing) in 6:26:23. What would you do differently?: I probably lost too much general mileage to injuries this year. But the reality was that only 2 of 24 entrants finished the 50 mile course because of the heat. It was 93F when I dropped at 1pm after 52 km and when I drove home around 3pm after getting some lunch it was 99F...would still have been on the course for another 90-120 minutes (if not more) after that time, in full sun with minimal support out there, so continuing not the best plan. I was as fit and healthy as possible for first attempt at 50 miles, but the weather had other plans. Forecast called for high of 96F and it got there. Cool at 6:30am start, but sun was out by 7:15 and temps quickly got into the 80s.
