3000m of swimming here. I did one of my own inventions, the "swim fartlek" workout, which is basically a way to get in a lot of swimming in a short time because you don't really stop. I know this sounds like a lot of triathletes' worst nightmare, but I actually like this a lot. Just seem to get into a rhythm better than with short repeats. The idea is:
25m tempo effort/25m easy (focus on good form )
And so on, increasing by 25m each time (50m/50m, 75m/75m ) as far up as you want to go, then back down again. (I went up to 175/175 today; total of 2450m of fartlek, sometimes up to 200/200 and back for 2850m. )
Sometimes I do the whole ladder continuously; today as water was pretty warm I stopped after 175/175 for a few seconds to drink and then did the "down" part pulling with paddles.
Somehow this always works out to at or under my HIM race pace, even though it is quite a bit longer. (Actually today it was my Oly race pace, which is really only a few seconds/100m faster than my best HIM swims. And all of those were in wetsuits....Go figure. Clearly I need to work on sighting in a race situation, or maybe just getting the lead out in shorter events! ) |
