Age Group Rank = 27/35
Pre-race routine:

Excited for my first triathlon. Wake up @ 5:15. Arrive 6:15. Set up transition area. 20 minutes before the race begins I get my timing chip, then hustle back to the transition area to get my googles (that I forgot). I overheard someone say my bib number and ask why I was on this rack. I guess I missed the memo. We were supposed to be on a designated rack (makes sense considering the signs at the end of every rack).I hustle to get everything moved... Rookie mistake.

Event warmup:

Missed swim warm up because I was moving my stuff....
Swim
  • 07m 18s
  • 300 meters
  • 02m 26s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was not aggressive in passing and I got stuck in traffic a lot! I thought I started out slowly enough, but I caught the guy in front of me during the first length. The end of each lane was a cluster. I lost a ton of time trying to navigate the turns and lane switches. I felt like I was on the highway, stuck behind somebody, while everyone was passing and wouldn't let me in. I was basically treading water for a bit while everyone passed and I was able to go.

A friends father was in the stands and said I looked very smooth when not in a crowd.

I have only been lap swimming for 2 months
What would you do differently?:

I need to be more aggressive and not worry about who was behind me (I kept looking back).

Try to calm down before the swim. My heart rate was 130 before jumping in the water.

Swim faster

Transition 1
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

I used my mountain bike shoes so I could run well in them.

Forgot to start my Garmin watch so I could monitor speed. I was fumbling with it as soon as I was on the bike.

Didn't have a Tri singlet. Had to dry off and put on a shirt.

No socks for bike.

What would you do differently?:

I need a bike computer and singlet.

Bike
  • 44m 5s
  • 13.5 miles
  • 18.37 mile/hr
Comments:

Struggled to get my heart rate down. I felt OK with the pace. It was wet and I slowed way down for the turns. I wasn't prepared for the hills. Only started riding a bike 2 months ago.
What would you do differently?:

I felt like i did well considering my HR and lack of experience.

Go faster
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

I came to a full stop at the line. I had to sit down to put running shoes on cause my legs wouldn't work right... lol

started the run with my gloves on. stuffed them in my shorts

Had to put socks on for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Take feet out of shoes early and hop off bike.

How to get socks and shoes on faster...
Run
  • 28m 18s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

I wanted to go faster. I felt cool. My legs wouldn't move faster and my HR was up there. I can run a 22 min 5k so I was a little stunned on how slow I was moving.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster. Get to the run with a lower HR.
Post race
Warm down:

Beer garden

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my HR. It was maxed the whole bike and run.

Event comments:

Honestly, it was a learning experience. I did things I wont do again, and I know what to do better next time. I felt good at the end and was happy with my race. For only having trained for 2 months I think I did pretty well.

I have set a few goals for next time.
