Pre-race routine:

Got to the race with plenty of time to get ready and set up my transition area. I went down to the swim course and looked it over as the sky began to brighten. I had a real calm feeling before the race start. I think that this is because I know what I have done in my training. I know how hard I have worked and I know I am more than able to do these distances. Although this was my first Olympic, I was in no way intimidated by the distances.
Event warmup:

Swam around a little

Comments:

Great swim in today's race. I have become so much better at open water swimming. I couldn't swim 400 yards straight a year ago, but I have come a very long way. I was very comfortable during the swim and kept reminding myself to swim in slo-motion and relax. It is amazing how swimming slower makes me faster. I pushed really hard towards the end, because I was just excited to get out of the water and on the bike.

Comments:

Pretty good T1.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing except learn to put my shoes on while they are attached to the bike. I don't really think that would help me too much though

Comments:

Great bike. I was a lot faster than I thought I would be and the bike, more than anything, is what made me finish faster than I thought I would. I was so thrilled with my performance on the bike in this race.

I was so fast on the downhills, consistently hittin 28-32 mph. I am so much more comfortable in the aero-bars and I am happy I kept them on the bike for the race.

The bike course was beautiful, very scenic and fast. The climbs were moderate and I was happy that I was actually passing people on the hills.

Overall, this was a great ride. Easily the most rewarding bike ride I have had.
Transition 2

Comments:

Pretty good T2, but I dropped my bike as I was headed into the area.

Comments:

Pretty good run. It took me a while to feel normal in the run. I usually feel better about 8 minutes into the run, but it took me a considerably longer time today. I think I really left it all out there on the bike.

At the 1 mile mark, I was shocked to see that I did my first mile in 9:15, very fast for me.

The run was on a nice shady course, and I was able to keep a good pace throughout most of it. During the run, I started telling myself that I no longer wanted to finish in 3 hrs, but 2:55 instead. As the run went on, I was feeling stronger and stronger and I was able to run hard to the finish.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked and drank lots of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing.

Event comments:

Great race! This was the perfect way for me to finish my second season of triathlon. I have a lot of confidence to carry me into next year. I am very proud of the step I took from sprint races to my first olympic.

I see so many changes in myself. I look at myself in a whole new light now. Towards the end of the run, I was looking at the people around me and marveling at how athletic they were, then I started thinking, I am right there with these people. What a great feeling.

I loved the olympic distance experience as well. I think that maybe once I do my first IM, I might just keep doing these races as they are both fun and they give you more of a feeling of accomplishment.
