Pre-race routine:

Love the hometown race. Woke up 6ish, had breakfast, rode the bike to the start.
Event warmup:

30 min prior to the start I did a light 15 min jog.
Swim
  • 16m 9s
  • 1640 yards
  • 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

Went out nice n' easy. Never done a Du before, so I had no strategy. Probably should have went faster. Oh well...

Bike
  • 56m 39s
  • 19.9 miles
  • 21.08 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought I was avg'ing 23, but I forgot to reset my computer from the last race so it skewed my pace. Damn, would have gone harder...
What would you do differently?:

Ride harder...
Transition 2
  • 01m
Run
  • 55m 10s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

This was the never ending 10k. It felt like it went on forever. Not a bad run considering. I knew I was going to spend most of my capital on the bike, so the slow run was no surprise. Somewhere before the run I lost my last eGel (or "endurance crack") and it affected me. The last half of the run I was definitely hurting for calories. The future mayor (Fenty) passed me at about mile 4. But I smoked his a$$ on the bike ;-)

Oh, and you have to take 45 seconds off for a pee break.
What would you do differently?:

Not lose my gel :-)
Post race
Warm down:

Straight over to the buffet table and downed a cookie and two Otis Spunkmeyer chocolate chunk muffins (the big a$$ ones). Then hung around cheering for a while. Then got drenched in a downpour and couldn't find the buses back to transition, so we got an extra 2.5 warmdown run in. And it turns out that we beat the buses back anyway. Stupid buses.

Event comments:

I almost forgot. This new age group sux. In 30-34 I would have been 14/38. Looks like I'll actually have to start training again...

Nice race! I thought about doing this one, and may consider it if it makes it to a second year...

Its nice to see that the possible new mayor is a multi-sport fan!

What ideal conditions we had on Saturday! I finished right behind Adrian Fenty and spoke with him for a few minutes. Seemed like a nice guy. I asked him if they would really ever let anyone swim a race in the Potomac. He said, yes, with the proper approvals. We shall see.

Nice bike! See you next time.

Nice race, Mike.  I get the new AG in about 2 months.  Dammit.  And kudos for using 'mayor' and 'crack' in the same RR...it brings back echoes of my favorite mayor of DC, Marion Berry.  He had some absolutely classic quotes...

"First, it was not a strip bar, it was an erotic club. And second, what can I say? I'm a night owl."

and

"***** set me up.".

I never thought I would see a triathlon in DC.  I grew up there and would be verrry reluctant to swim in the Potomac.  The future mayor running in the race must have been cool.  Imagine Marion Berry (or even Sharon Pratt Kelly) competing.  I would have paid money to see that.  If they do it again next year I'm in.
