Let me be the first to say:

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Triathlons!

It is an addiction definitely. This was my first year and did 6 sprints, my only scheduled Oly (Olympic or International Distance) was shortened due to rain. It was a blast. I played basketball religiously until a year ago when I tore my ACL. The doc started me with biking and allowed swimming, but very little running. I do not have a history of any swimming beyond lessons on how not to drown but have discovered a true love for OWS (open water swimming) I wrote an article, An OWS Moment, which on this site. It explains the exhiliration I have found in training alone. With your background and current training in the pool - you will do great! Just look for training programs on this site and elswhere to help guide you through training.

When looking for crazy frriends, you came to the right place. Everyone on this site is great. Open, friendly, sharing - now we just need the rest of the world to act like us.

Happy Training for 2007

Party on, Wayne.  And I wouldn't worry about that whole last place thing... the swim is usually the biggest obstacle for people and you're way past that, so you're on your way.

I do have a fear of embarrassing myself. Maybe I should wear a jersey that says "Pardon me, this is my first triathlon"...lol, so if I come in last, no one will ask questions or look at me funny!

Never be ashamed of where or when you finish. It is a challenge for many to finish, so always keep your head high if you are first or last, cause in the end, You did finish and YOU are a Triathlete. There is no other event or group of people like this in the world.

Kristen, I'm not too far from any of those places you mentioned (Connecticut is such a small state anyway).  I live along the shoreline not too far from Branford.  I work in Middletown and grew up in Mystic/Groton area.

Next time you are in Connecticut, don't hesitate to send me out a PM if you want any info on places to ride/workout or if you want to join up for a bike ride.  I'll be doing weekend rides right through the winter.

Hi Scout,

I'm in the Bellefonte/State College Area - very hilly, so I have no idea what kind of pace I have on flat distances...lol. You're in Philly I see.

I love your personal quote - gave me a laugh. I've found I prefer the Pearl Izumi Quest Bike short, lots of padding and minimal chaffing, but that's me!

I look forward to getting to know you!

Yeah, that's me, always here to entertain and amuse.

I lived in State College for about 8 years. I went to school there for about 6 of those years, too. Then moved to Altoona for about 3, and now outside Philly.

my total with shoes and pedals (dont remember what brand of pedals but i can tell you that i have to twist my heel to get out..and the shoes are specialized) and bike came to $1336 (includes fitting) so my 1k down really helped, but walking out of the shop empty handed was soooo sad. you are the first person i aave seen on here with my bike. i am glad to hear that you like it!!

i have been searching online and ebay (i have an ebay problem) and have been wonderng about he shorts. thanks for the rec. doyou find that they run true to size?

are you using the factory seat? i am concerned about my girlparts...

Welcome aboard, SweetKristen.  You have the swimming background, you are already running and you have a brand new triathlon bike, so you are all set.  All you have to do now is:

  1. Pick out a triathlon that interests you and sign up for it as soon as possilbe - this will give you the incentive to keep training
  2. Pick out a training program from the "Articles" section of this site - pick a program that will get you to your chosen triathlon.  There is no need to do a HIM or IM training program if you plan on doing a sprint.
  3. Train faithfully - stick to your training program schedule - do not train more than is called for in the plan and certainly do no train beyond your level of fitness.
  4. Train smart and remain injury free - if something hurts, STOP whatever activity you are doing and take a break.  If a pain persists, consult a physician.
  5. Most importantly ... HAVE FUN

greetings Kristen... welcome to BT.  It seems that you are already getting involved.

Actually picking a race is the best way for me to stay motivated... Choose one now, and train for it.

I spent four years as grad student at PSU.  That's a great area for training.

 Peace,

Brian
