Subject: Foam Roll trouble?
I just got my foam roll in to do some self massaging, after getting home from a run tonight I tried it out since my calves were a little tight.  After using them my calves feel like they're in a knot much bigger then before I used it.  All I do is put one leg over the other and roll ontop of the foam roll with each leg. Anyone have any suggestions to what I'm doing wrong? I

I'm no expert so I can't say that you are necessarily doing it wrong, but I can tell you what my trainer/physcial therapist has me doing. Not only do I roll my calf the entire length, but I also roll side to side.  So i start at the ankle roll up a couple of inches then roll side to side for the entire width of my calf stopping for a few seconds at any "hot" spots, then roll up a couple more inches and do it again.  It seems to get out all of my knots, but warned...it can hurt like a BI($* at first.

Heh...foam rollers = pain!!!!

My suggestion on the calves might be to start by putting BOTH calves on.  Distribute the weight 50%!  After doing that a few times THEN move up to one leg at a time.  Make sense?

Same thing with ITB's.  You can put one foot on the floor (the one not attached to the ITB that is on the foam roller) to support some of the weight until your ITB is stretchy enough to put all your weight on it.

Indeed, the foam roller hurts so good.  Mine's starting to get very v-shaped.  Is it time to replace it?

HERE is a great article that talks about technique in using the foam roller for "self-myofascial release".  I've found better results by implementing their recommendations as best I can.

Licensed Massage Therapist here.  Yep, sounds like you're doing it right.  Although I would agree with the suggestions of previous posters for added benefits. 

The extra tightness you are feeling could actually be caused by not drinking enough water in the 2 hours following your self-massage.  Just like when you receive a professional massage, soft tissue self-manipulation releases lactic acid and other toxins. If there is not proper hydration to take those wastes away, it settles back into your tissue and can cause more soreness and make the knots worse.  So be sure you are drinking plenty of water.

But it is normal, even with proper hydration, to feel some added soreness after deep work on tight places.  Though you'll feel better the day after your run, than if you hadn't rolled your legs! 

If you really want to go deep on a big knot, another suggestion is to use a tennis ball on the area.  It targets the area more specifically, but it will also make you more sore.  Again drink lots of water.
