Total Time = 6h 43m
Overall Rank = ?/435
Age Group = 34-40
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

got up at 4am, ate, went through stuff, got ready, did it.
Event warmup:

stretching and walking
Swim
  • 41m 55s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 10s / 100 meters
Comments:

it was way easier than I thought it would be.
What would you do differently?:

probably sight better
Transition 1
  • 04m 3s
Comments:

easy, seemed like a blur. Probably a minute slow, but it was my first one so I'm happy how it went.
What would you do differently?:

nothing, except grabbed some electrolyte or salt tablets.
Bike
  • 3h 21m 5s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.71 mile/hr
Comments:

bike was fine. I held back quite a bit in order to save energy. There were some headwinds, but nothing bad. All the hills were rolling and very easy. I got bored, so I put on a charge at mile 40 just to become interested in the race. Kept heart rate more or less moderate.
What would you do differently?:

get a tri bike. really wished I had one. That would probably give me another mph without any effort. I think I might push a little harder, but I was worried the run would kill me if I did. I normally train at a higher rate.
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

easy. met my expectations
What would you do differently?:

BRING SALT TABLETS OR ELECTROLYTE TABLETS.
Run
  • 2h 34m 41s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

hard and horrible beyond mile 10. was cramping badly and ended up doing 15 minute miles for the last three. That sucked. Otherwise, nutrition for the race was very good.
What would you do differently?:

take salt tablets! I hadn't done this in training, so I didn't do it on race day. bad mistake, total newbie.
Post race
Warm down:

face death, eat, lay down, etc.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of salt, for starters. I probably should have done more running in training.

Event comments:

they ran out of food after the race very quickly. aid stations were mostly good. I hate running multiple loops for any road race, so if you hate loops, don't sign up for this. But there were LOTS of great athletes participating, I thought. The heat of the day was rough.

I take full blame for having problems on the run portion...I'm a runner and it's kind of inexcuseable, although having stumbled and nearly fallen a dozen times from cramps, there was nothing to do but suck it up and walk. It was a hot day but I've run in that kind of heat before...but never in the context of following a long ride like that. I should have taken salt or electrolyte tablets during training so that come race day I could be confident that they wouldn't upset my stomach or anything.

The more I think about it, the more I wish I would have really clobbered the bike ride. I held back thinking I would need the energy for the run, and it turned out that during the run I didn't even feel that tired. I got up today and was barely sore at all, so I know my fitness was there.

anyway, hope to see you all at a race!

Even if your run wasn't what you're capable of, think of the people that were sitting at home in front of the t.v.! Actually, during the run, I would have liked to be doing just that!

Nevertheless, you're a Rock Star for doing it!
