Total Time = 1h 28m 28s
Overall Rank = 60/261
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 7/47
Pre-race routine:

I got up at 5:00, got dressed and ate 1 1/2 mini bagels w/ peanut butter and a banana. I drank a little bit of Gatorade. We got to the venue around 6:15. Got organized and then went into the pool area to get warm!
Event warmup:

I just stretched legs and arms. OPted not to warm up in the pool because the lag time between the end of warm ups and my start would have been 40 minutes.
Swim
  • 07m 31s
  • 400 meters
  • 01m 53s / 100 meters
Comments:

I passed the girl in front of me and wasn't passed by anyone. Yea! I only 1 second slower than my submitted time, though I have done faster in a 50m pool. Flip turns under the lane ropes are an interesting feat!

What would you do differently?:

Pushed a bit more; concentrated on my stroke more. I was so amazed that I was really participating in my first tri that I forgot to focus!
Transition 1
  • 05m 26s
Comments:

Part of the T1 was a run around the building to TA. Because it was so cold, I took the time to put on gloves, headband, pants and a long sleeve dri-fit shirt, in addition to shoes/helmet.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more & run faster from pool to TA.
Bike
  • 45m 56s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 16.24 mile/hr
Comments:

I enjoyed the bike -- the day was very pleasant, even if it was a bit chilly. I was afraid that I would be too cold to enjoy it, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was probably more tentative, due to inexperience. My hands and feet were a bit cold. The hill wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.
What would you do differently?:

I think I could have pushed a bit harder on the bike. Being a novice, though, I held back because I didn't want to run out of steam on the run! Also, maybe find some hills to practice on...not easy in the Tidewater area.
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

I took time to pull off pants and put on shorts...probably didn't need to, but it was ok. Needed to take off/put on shoes after that.
What would you do differently?:

Not change and just put up with being hot on the run.
Run
  • 27m 36s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Plenty of volunteers (including my 3 kids!) directing people, but the road markings could've been more visible. They were done in yellow on the street. I only saw the 1 mile mark and completely missed the 2 mile mark.
Legs only felt "rubbery" in the TA...made me think I could've pushed harder on the bike. However, I did feel tired cardio-wise, so I found a pace and just kept going.
What would you do differently?:

Not be afraid to push a bit.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, stretched, drank water. Shortly after I came in, I was able to see my husband start his run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being tentative and afraid to push it, thinking I wouldn't have enough left at the end.

Event comments:

Great first experience! I'm so glad I met the challenge! Now to think about what to do to improve! Definitely work on transitions...kills me to think that I could've shortened my time by at least a minute, maybe more!

Great 1st TRI - I still aspire to swim that fast.  I did the same thing on the bike - held back more than necessary because I didn't know what the run would be like.  I guess that makes improving on your time next year all the easier.   Keep it up!!!

Great job on your first tri!!  Congrats, triathlete!

That was a pretty tough first tri considering how cold it was.  You were really fast!  Now you just have to get faster for next year.
