Hi all

I have just moved here to Charlotte (University / Concord actually) from Australia. Are there any tri clubs / groups I may be able to join for the occasional workout?

Cheers

Luke

Welcome to NC...I'm in Raleigh. I do know there are several BT'ers in Charlotte. I'm not sure about clubs but hopefully they should chime in and let you know. Happy training.

Yes, Luke ... welcome to NC! Like my friend Tri'nNC, I'm from the Raleigh area, so I'm not sure about what's going on in the Charlotte area. I do know that Love2Tri is from that area ... and she ROCKS!

Hey Luke!

Welcome to Charlotte!  I've been here about 4 years now and love it.  Ironically a good friend of mine moved to Melbourne Australia a year ago and he loves it there.  You do realize you picked the wrong time of the year to move here.  You have to go through 2 "winters" now.

My wife and I are new to triathlons so I haven't gotten into any tri-clubs yet.  But I do think there are some out here.  I definitely know of a lot of bike clubs so if you are looking for riding partners, there are a lot of bike folks around that usually have weekend routes planned.  We're on the south side (in Marvin actually) so I don't know all the details around University (except for Lowe's Motor Speedway   )

PM me if you need any insight into the city, shopping, restaraunts, things to do, etc.

Welcome!

Hi Luke!
Welcome to Charlotte! You're in luck b/c we have a vibrant tri community in Charlotte. I live on the south side of town so I don't know a lot about the Concord/University area but I'll give you what I know:

Tri Clubs: Charlotte Track and Tri Club (CTTC) is the largest club in the area. http://www.charlottetrackandtriclub.org/ The YMCA's of Charlotte are awesome and you will find a lot of triathletes and tri clubs training out of those. Christy McCormick at the Lake Norman YMCA sends out a weekly newsletter about rides in the area. Of course, riding season is coming to a close (for me anyway) but you can send her an email to get on the list. ([email protected])

Bike Clubs: On your side of town check out The Rocky River Cycling Club: http://www.rockyriverroadclub.org/. You can find a lot of cycling info at: http://www.bikecharlotte.com/. The best LBS in your area is The Right Gear in Kannapolis http://rightgear.net/v2/. You'll also want to check out the Time Trials at Lowes Motorspeedway http://www.carolinatt.org/. They're a great way to track your cycling progress. Of course, a lot of LBS sponsor weekly rides so you'll just need to ask around.

I will be joining one or more of these clubs in the spring as I begin training for my first HIM. I've done mostly solo training until now but the prospect of riding 50+ miles by myself does not appeal to me!

Running Clubs: Don't know of any additonal clubs besides the CTTC. The local running stores, Run for Your Life & Charlotte Running Co., both sponsor weekly runs. Run for Your Life has a store in the University Area off off Mallard Creek Church Rd. http://www.runforyourlife.com/. Again, a lot of people train out of the YMCA.

Of course, if you'll be here for racing season then you'll want to check out: http://www.set-upinc.com.

Hope this helps. Please pm me if you have any questions about anything!

Must be regional ... have met some super cool folks in this area, too ... we just can't be very helpful for you folks over in the Great State of Mecklenburg!

I'm not involved with any of the local clubs yet either. There are actually two group rides coming up in the next 2 weeks. One is this Sat at Northeast Medical Center in Concord, 10, 30 or 60 miles, http://www.northeastmedical.org/TourDeTots/. The other is at Lowe's Motor Speedway on 11/12, www.bigstampede.com. I'll be riding the 25 miler on 11/12 with some friends from work. Feel free to email if you want to hook up with us.

At that end of the county, your best bets for pool time are probably the University YMCA or West Cabarrus YMCA (just off I-85 near Poplar Tent Rd).

Hi all

Thanks so much for your responses (especially the links to the various clubs etc) - much appreciated.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to bring my bike over so I'll pretty much be concentrating on running and swimming for now.

I may buy a bike next year if I am going to do some tri's over your summer.

Once we get settled here I'll definitely contact (or "reach out to" as you guys would say!) y'all to catch up for some running and swimming.

It is great to have this forum to keep the motivation up!

Take care and happy training.

Luke

I, too am fairly new to NC. I live in Cary, right behind the YMCA, and work in North Raleigh.
I love it here, and the way I see it, coming from NY, there are no winters here.

I spent ost of the summer cycling, but am working on my running now, with the intent of running the Myrtle Beach Half Mary in February, and then knock off a bunch of Tri's next year, leading up to the Duke half.

I am running the Old Reliable tomorrow.

I'm only a month and a half late on this thread, but thought that I'd point out that in addition to the excellent resources love2tri pointed out, you might be interested to know that the Lake Norman YMCA organizes a series of open water swims during the spring and summer.  You can do one or two loops of a roughly 750m loop that they use for the race.  There are always rides afterwards, as well.
