Yes runningwoof you may not wear the offending cologne because it bothers the co-worker but another person may not be that nice. So then are you going to pass a law that people cannot wear offending cologne to someone else???

I especially cant believe that the people that are GAY on here are for getting rid of smoking in public... I mean come on, can gay people not be any more tolerant since you guys feel like no one is more picked on than you??? In one thread you want to make same sex unions legal but the next outlaw smoking.

You know there is a lot of other people that dont agree with same sex unions but here you want someone else to respect YOUR right to be treated as a equal partner in the eyes of the law as regular couples do... seems hipacritical huh...

Like Comet said, some people thing riding a bike on the road way is hazzardess even though the LAW says we can... a lot of other people dont feel that way, that is why we get honked at, ran off the road, yealled and cussed at. But here it is ok with the LAW to do it but others feel we are a danger to ourselves and others...

Just remember that!

First, about the bike riding...it is illegal to ride your bike on certain roads and freeways...so do you disobey that law because you feel it is your right to do so!  Do you obey the traffic laws set in place?  We do regulate bike riding!  So the bike comparison is perfect, I have not said I want it outlawed, but I want people to respect the rules set into place so that there is minimal impact on the majority (where I work, there are more non-smokers than smokers).  It is illegal to smoke in Bars and restraunts in California, so I don't have to worry about staying in if I want to go out.  But if I am running on a nature path, it does bother me when I have to run through a cloud of smoke, but I would never say anything to anybody smoking on the path, because it is legal, I think it is rude, but legal.

Second, In Ref to Cologn, many gyms have rules about wearing cologn, I worked in one, where we have actually asked people to leave because it was so overpoweing.  It was a rule that they were told when they joined.  It was posted on the wall of all areas along with the other rules, And they were given warnings.

I don't understand your comparison to being Gay.  I think it is misplaced and nearly a personal attack.  There are people that disagree with me, my lifestyle and my right to privleges afforded to heterosexual couples, it is their right to have those opinions and religeous beliefs, but in this country, I should be afforded the same privledges as you, or the person next to you, like the right to breath freely.  Again, I am not saying I want smoking outlawed, but just like riding your bike on the freeway, there is a place and time to do it and not to do it, and where it will affect other people is not the place.

Oh and my partner and I are a regular couple...as much as anyone else!

I wasnt going to respond to the second comment because it is frankly just stupid... but hey now I am. I was comparing the GAY thing to people wanting smoking BANNED in public. And I am gussing you are GAY since you responded this way (since I only know of two people on here that are and now you make 3). I was making the comparison that be careful about making what you what and it infringing on other peoples rights. Because it is their free will to smoke in public or in their car. And that there are a lot of people who think GAY marriage is wrong (because of laws being passed in almost every state) but here YOU feel you should be trated as everyone else. Smokers are people too... Be careful where you cast that stone...
And I take offense that you think I would be lame enough to make a personal attack on you because you are Gay...

Again the bike comparison was that some people think it is dangerous on ANY road... not just Freeways which in the state where I live is the only place it is banned.

CBarnes - 2006-10-26 11:37 AM Smoking is a nasty habit but it is a legal product and I am very concerned with the laws we are passing restricting the rights of citizens to enjoy a legal product.

Guns are legal, but shooting them in restaurants is probably a bad idea.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I have already been verbally bashed once this week (not on BT)...sort of on the defensive.  You were replying to my post, and bringing up the Gay card, in a completely unrelated subject, using terms like "regular couples", being that I have not hid that I am gay on here in any way, shape or form...I thought you were bringing that up as a personal attack.  But not being sure...thats why I said Nearly a personal attack...I think we actually agree on many points one of them being that smoking should not be outlawed.... Where we differ, is you believe that economics should drive this prohibition, where I believe that common sense, good manors and if necessary, the government should enforce it. I think smokers have the burden to only smoke in those areas that are appointed as smoking areas.

And just for the record, I don't believe my comments were lame or stupid or even unfounded.

No I said I would not be as lame, I said your comment was stupid...  It is cool... I am glad we agree on something... Sorry you have had a rough week... and no I was pretty oblivious that you were gay... and I meant the "regular couples" comment because I am not gay and that is how I would I guess call a hetero couple. Not because I think it is right but just because I am a idiot and not sure what I would call same sex couples anyway.

Like I said before, I am all for same sex marriages, I think you guys have just as much right to be unhappy as the rest of us "regular couples" do...

I am saying let the market make the rule not government....

Fock the market. The market doesn't give a ratsass about us. The market only cares about the money we have in our wallet and finding every way to squeeze every penny out of it. I didn't elect the market. The market doesn't protect my rights, nor does it CARE about my rights. The market would put arsenic in my Wheaties if it thought it could turn a profit doing so.

The government, on the other hand, is SUPPOSED to regulate. We elect politicians to pass laws and rules we want. We don't have to live at the un-tender mercies of "the market."

The market be damned. Government is SUPPOSED to make rules.

Gov't is run by the lobbyists who work for the companies that make up the market.  It's every bit about the economy and the big companies that drive it.

Clean election movement. Check it out!

The "market" doesn't make the rules. and we shouldn't rely on some misguided and naive belief that the market is going to make things "equal" or right. The market doesn't give a rats about you or me. The market doesn't get elected out of office.

Elected officials don't either -- unless you have the money/power/majority TO vote them out of office.

We're about to experience a power flip.

My point is that the market doesn't make the rules and we shouldn't expect the market to act out of benevolence. The government - our elected officials - however is charged with making rules.

To say that the government shouldn't make rules is ludicrous.

of course they do but the influence for their decisions comes from the companies and their lobbyists.  All decisions are a revenue driver or an expense, the more rev, the better.

Yeah, I know lobbyists buy politicians. However, not ALL votes are bought.

And it still doesn't dispute the fact that the market doesn't exist to protect us. The market exists to take our money. The government is supposed to make rules and to say that we should expect the government to relinquish this power to the market is preposterous. The market's gonna have to buy that power just like we have to buy goods in the market.

The market is a bigger machine, think about the Fed, interest rates, the deficit and taxes, they are all tied together.  I could probably make a case that it does protect us, the money generated through bonds, notes, etc., pay for our military, govt, wars, etc.

Mmm yeah, I remember macro and micro economics from my uni days. Doesn't change the fact that "the market" doesn't write laws. Lawmakers write laws.

At least do me the honor of a sarcastic font for your intro.  I'm not trying to give an eco lessen obviously.  And I'm well aware that politicians create law (I'm just a Bill is ringing in my head).  My point is that politics is severly influenced by the economy and politicians are judged on their influence on the economy.

Last night on the way home from work while riding through a neighborhood a car passed me and the driver flung a cigarette out of the window.  The car then pulled into his driveway and stopped.  I quickly stopped and grabbed the lit cigarette and proceeded to ride into his driveway and fling the cigarette back towards him saying...."Here, I think you dropped something."  The guy just stood there with a dazed look on his face.

My right to live with clean air supersedes a smokers right to smoke.
