Hey all, I am thinking about getting myself an early X-mas present!!! Has anyone here trained with a powertap and have you noticed any benefits from being able to train while observing your power output? I have spoke to a few people who swear by it and I have also spoken to a few people who do not really care so much about it. Any opinion would be welcome.

Cheers.

Mike

Hi,

I train and race with PT. I would say that it's the best training tool I have and I have been able to bring my 40km TT from 1:06 to 58:13.

But the PT is only worthwhile if used properly. It's a big investment and if you are not disciplined and if you don't use it properly it won't work for you.

Let me know if you have any more questions,

Ditto the above.  It's a great tool, but you have to take the time to learn to use it or it will become a very expensive cyclo-computer.  The cyclingpeaks software should be considered a mandatory purchase along with the PT.  Also, this book is a a great resource.  If you're serious about your training, it's one of thebest investments you can make IMO.

I just ordered one and have been reading the Allen & Coggan book.

If you end up with a Powertap brand, Performance bike sells them. Often they have 20% off coupons coupled with 10% rebate as a performance member saves you 28%....nice savings on something that costs $1000.

I have a coach and having a power meter will allow him to review all my workouts and help me improve more as he can tell what I actually did.

Which model of PT did you get from performance?  I have an opportunity to get the Powertap SL model, which retails for $1199 (apparently) without the wheel, for $999 wheel included.

That's a pretty good deal for the SL.

SL with wheel for $720...keep shopping list price is $1000 with the cheap wheel that comes as a set from the mfg. The local bike store told me they do it as a cheapy wheel just to get people in the system. List price of unit is $900 with the wheel is $1000.

That's not an SL hub there.  I'm guessing its a PT Pro.

yup training with power is one of the best thing I did this past season. Many people disregard power meters becase they don't really understand how to take advantage of it. It is a shame that many spend the $$$ on one and only use it as a very expensive cycling computer. If you get one, learn how to use it or get a coach who knows how to take advantage from it

Good luck!

I got the SL--built up on a 32-spoke Velocity Deep V rim and a disc cover for racing from wheelbuilder.com.  The Sl is supposed to be a more water resistent hub.  It seems to be as I don't think I've lost any signal from water in the hub, but I have had problems in wet weather with the contacts on the computer itself.  I've since learned that a few drops of dielectric grease may help alleviate that issue.

That's what my LBS has told me, too.  It's been suggested to me to go with the LS model for that reason.
