Subject: sensitive issue - saddle sores....

Turn away now or suffer the consequences of the discussions.

well, not sure if it's saddle sores but after some long rides I get painful cysts right underthe sit bones.  Yes, I use Pearl Izumi good cycling shorts, and butt butt'r, a Profile Design tri stryke saddle.  I am switching to a different saddle that is wider, see if that helps.  It's not a time in the saddle thing, I don't think, as I am doing 300+ miles a month.  Not a ton, I know, but I'm not a newbie.

In the meantime, any advice?  commiserating?

I'll be blunt....

When you see them form a white-head, pop them just as you would a pimple.  Then keep them clean and dry ALWAYS, with the exception of at night when you might want to keep Desetin (sp) baby cream ointment on them.  I also powder my underwear with medicated baby powder during hot days when I stay sweaty at work.

There......is that blunt enough?

Thanks Michael, blunt is the only way,.  The only hitch is that sometimes they don't get to the head stage and just remain a cyst, so would like to prevent them altogether.  I think I just have to wait for those to go away.

I have gotten them too.  I use some Neosporin ointment both while riding and after I shower.  It helps.

Use miconazole cream (Monistat, Vagisil, etc) along with your chamois butter on all your rides. Works wonders to prevent the saddle sores.

Keep in mind that chamois butter is meant for leather or fake-leather chamois, not padded fabric chamois like Pearl Izumi (attack, ultra or micro sensor).

I've tried using chamois butter with padded fabric chamois and it doesn work.

I've never had a problem using chamois buttr or any other chamois cream on synthetic chamoises (chamoisi?)
I use Assos myself. It's got some antifungal properties to it.

I have been real lucky with respect to saddle sores[i have never had one].  Here is what I do:
before the ride:
Wear Clean shorts (with synthetic pad)
Chamois Butter
use Baby wipes during rides (after nature stops)

After the ride:
get clean (shorts and self) as soon as possible
apply neosporin type ointment to any tender areas.

My saddle(s) are Brooks B-17s.  The one with the most riding time is 30+ yrs old.

I think people may be using different terminology for Synthetic.  There are synthetic (fake) leather chamois that work similar to old-style leather chamois. They are meant for your tender parts to slide freely as you move.  The dense padded fabric shorts opt for padding over slipperyness.

Several people I ride with use chamois butter (mostly Assos) with their fabric padded shorts and have no problems.  Yet others, including myself, don't like the feeling of the padding when its saturated with cream.  It gets tacky and loses its spongyness.

For prevention:

I use Bag Balm, and as others have noted always wear clean shorts.

For those occasions I've had sores:

Treat like a zit. I use Oxy-10 to dry them out.

If it's swelling, then try Preparation-H. It works.
