Subject: Stupid Newbie Question
Not being a paying member (at least not yet), I may be off base here, and if so, that's fine. Just tell me and I'll be quiet. I am trying to pick a training plan and I have a couple of questions about the plans. I clicked on the training plan support link to post the question there, but it took me to a page that wanted me to be a paying member. So the answer to this question might cost money.

So here are my two questions. When the plan title says 2X or 3X, what does that mean. It doesn't seem to mean workouts per week. All the plans have way more than 2 or 3 workouts per week. And secondly, If a training plan has swim/bike or swim/run on the same day, then does that mean that they are one right after the other like a race (brick)? Can it mean one in the morning and one later in the day? I don't usually run or bike near the pool. Even if I do this on a weekend, I need to know if I can have some time between events. If not, I have to re-think things. Thanks.

Guessing that you're looking at some of the basic plans.  2x or 3x refers to how many times you do EACH sport.

The plans will tell you if you are supposed to do the workout as a brick (only a few of those in the plans).   Otherwise, feel free to split them up--most people do.

The 2X or 3X refers to how many times you do each discipline per week.  A 2X program means you workout 6 times (2 swim, 2 run, 2 bike).  If two are listed on the same day, it does not imply that they have to be done back to back (also known as a "brick" workout).  In fact, if you are just starting out, I would suggest not to brick your workouts until your body gets a little more accustomed to these 3 disciplines.  But then again, everyone comes into this sport at a variety of different fitness levels.  In the end, do what feels right to you.

Hey Jim, welcome to BT!

The 2X, 3X thing is how many workouts for each sport per week.  You don't have to do them back-to-back unless they're a specified "brick" workout for that day.  Actually it's recommended that on two-workout days you do one in the morning and one later in the day.

From my personal experience, I can tell you that the plans are great!  For my first sprint I used the run-focused beginner sprint plan, but modified it a little based on my fitness level at the time, and starting in December I'll be on the Beginner HIM plan.

Good luck with your training!

(funny!  by the time I finished writing this, there were already two replies.  BT's great, ain't it?)

Yep, I think the others summed it up nicely.  There are only 'brick' workouts in the last month of the plan to get race ready - all of the other that have two workouts on the same day are 'two a days'...do them apart, get fueled and rested in between.

Good luck...let us know if any other questions.
