Ok... I've seen some comments about showering already. But here's your chance to voice your habits. I usually don't shower. Yep, I'll admit it. I work out in the AM's (5 am) and then shower, go to work, home and sleep...then do it all over again. I used to do a quickie splash type thing but then saw that no one else showered so figured why bother? I mean there's a ton of chlorine in the pools as it is so wouldn't that kill any stinky feet I may have? (by the way, I'm sure there are some pretty creepy germs that cling to my feet just walking from the locker room to the pool and back each day).

I usually swim in the AM as well, and don't shower beforehand. On the rare occasions I swim after work, I'll usually just stand under the water and rinse off (but I don't use soap or scrub or anything). If I ever were to head to the pool all sweaty, like after a ride or run, I would probably rinse off and use the soap from the dispenser that's in the shower, but I doubt I would use a washcloth or shower puff or anything.

But, I hate it when the guys come out of the steam room and jump right in the pool. That's gross. I think I'd prefer they pee in the pool .

OH NOOOO! Let's not go there! Now, that is something I've NEVER done in training. NEVER.

but I HAVE done it in the ocean and maybe in some resort pools in my younger days after having drunk up the afternoon with lots of cervasas.

I've never peed in the pool either. OWS - ocean, lake, or river - now that's a different story .

I shower before my swim primarily to get my hair wet, so it won't absorb so much chlorine, maybe it's an old wive's tale, but I follow it.

I get wet so that I will get cold going from the shower to the pool.  Then the water in the pool feels warm.

That sounds logical but the showers in my Y sometimes take 3 mins or so just to go from frosty to luke warm let alone nice and toasty.

I don't shower before. I did it the first couple of times because I'm a regulator by profession and following the rules is just in my nature ... until no one else follows them ... and then I don't have to be so freaking cold walking from the locker room to the pool.

i do mainly out of habit and so my hair soaks up normal water and not chlorine water.  The problem is leaving that nice warm shower to walk to the pool.  As soon as I open the door out of the locker room there is a nice COLD (especially in the winter) draft.

In a word? No. I like the little jolt of cold ... and then I commence to swimming to get warm.

Showering before entering the pool is all about maintaining the pool environment.  Yes, it is loaded with chlorine, which hopefully is managed at a constant level through the day.  The point of showering is to wash off whatever lotions and potions we may have on our skin (including deodorant and conditioner) and in our hair.  Less "stuff" introduced into the pool means less chlorine needs to be added.

As a swim instructor who spends waaay too many hours in the pool, I know I appreciate less chlorine so please shower!

I was showering until it got cold, if only for the chlorine hair protection. But the pool is outdoors and so is the shower and the shower water is NOT heated. Now I bring a gallon jug of warm water from home and basically douse my head and hair before jumping in. People look at me like I'm a weirdo. But that's ok because I am a weirdo.

If it is cold and I am feeling it, I will go to the steam room for a minute or two to get warmed up and stretch, then take a full on shower, soap and all, before I jump in. Otherwise, I am a very clean individual - no taunts, pleasse - and just rinse off in the shower with water only.

Rarely shower before swimming (but I do, if I've been working out or otherwise not particularly clean). I rarely use cologne or other lotions to contaminate the pool.

In my younger days (when I was lifeguarding), we'd go for a mid-afternoon run and end by jumping back in the water. I'm sure it was pretty disgusting.

Yup. Any hair dresser can tell if you're a swimmer or not based on if you soak your hair with tap water first. It acts as a barrier to the chlorine.

Guys probably don't care, but for girls with long hair, it's a must if you want to have healthy hair.

I shower each and every time before entering a public pool for the reason Lisa pointed out.  Hair absorbs less chlonie it is already soaked with water.
