Is there a good online resource that will give me a basic fitting ballpark for a tri-specific bike? I ride a 56 road bike, and most everything I have seen says I want a 54 cm tri-bike, but I'd like to be a little more sure.

Get a fit from a reputable bike shop to be sure. My tri frame is smaller than my regular road bike frame though. Not sure if that will be the same in everyone's case. It can also vary between frame builders too.

Never seen an online fit calculator for tri bikes though I've seen them for road. I agree, go to a lbs and see what they say. Generally, I think most will get a smaller tri bike than their road.

If your bike feels comfortable, your back does not hurt, your shoulders are fine, then your bike fits you more or less.  Do not be misled by formulas.  According to all the formulas I've looked at, I should be riding a 56cm road bike but that is just too small for me.  I ride a 58cm bike with a longer stem to avoid back problems as I have a long torso.  Bike fitting formulas are approximate.  The best way to fit on a bike is to actually get on it.  But, here are some links to look at:

In my endless search for a bike I came across this site: Bike Fit Calculator

I'm not sure how accurate it is because when I went to my LBS to get fitted they would not tell me what size frame I needed because they didn't want me to buy the bike online.

Good luck with your search.

I think this is a tri fit calculator, based on that they only sell tri/TT bikes and their link for fit details is "tri_fit_details.html":

I think I've narrowed things down a bit...but now I have a dilemma. I like the look of the 2006 Quintana Roo Kilo, but I don't know whether to go with the 57cm or 59cm size. My goals include speed and comfort while attempting my first half-iron June, '07 and full Ironman in '08.

My personal measurements are:

Inseam 35.3125 in
Trunk 29.375 in
Forearm 13.6875 in
Arm 25.6875 in
Thigh 24.5 in
Lower Leg 22.5 in
Sternal Notch 61.375 in
Total Body Height 74.875 in

If anyone here has experience in this size range, I'd love to pick your brains! Thanks.

here is yet another fit calculator from WrenchScience.  FWIW, i have used the fit calculators at WS and Competitive Cyclist and came up with the same results despite their methods being a bit different.  Its a hard decision to make buying a bike having never seen it or been able to sit on it.  a call to these shops may help clear up any concerns.

maybe the question should be asked, has anyone had success getting fitted "virtually" by either Competitive Cyclist or Wrench Science or other comparable shop.  i just happen to be in communication with WR now and considering have them import and build me a bike and would like to see what people have to say.

Looking for a bike is stressful stuff. Is that WrenchScience fit calculator designed with a tri bike in mind or just a road bike???

I'll be hitting a local bike shop this week. Hopefully, they can be of some help. We shall see.

That's why I was looking for Basic size. I'm intending to get the bike online and get tweaked/fitted locally...
