Elite 3972 Reno | Subject: I am afraid to go shopping I NEVER thought I would say such a thing..... but all the black friday reports and scenes of people making mad dashes and waiting in line have made me stay between home and the gym all weekend! This is sooooo unlike me. I used to love browsing for sport, soaking up the energy of the crowds, soaking in the holiday glitter and music. I even saw that Reno was having a craft fair - I love a fair! What could be wrong with me - is it age? living in Winnemucca too long? |

Master 1914 Finally north of the Mason-Dixon Line | Subject: RE: I am afraid to go shopping It's genetics - since we're sisters I can say genetics.... but I HATE shopping. I no longer have the patience and desire to walk the malls looking and browsing. I go with a mission and leave and pray I don't have to go back again soon. I can only hope that when we turn oh, about 60 we'll start enjoying shopping again - looking for all the cute grandkid or great niece/nephew outfits like our mother.... that's my 2 cents! |

Elite 3972 Reno | Subject: RE: I am afraid to go shopping Winnemucca has a walmart - I got out just in time- it is going "super walmart" (the whole county only has 14,000 people!). It isn't genetics. Our coming of age outing with Mom was to strand outside of "the Clothes Tree" for the semi-annual sale with all the other well heeled ladies of Lancaster county hoping for some pendelton at half price when the doors opened. Mom would send me in to grab everything in our size and she would hold the dressing room. it was contact shopping- -I remember getting an elbow to the head that made my ears ring. Cathleen, as I recall, didn't "get it" or maybe by that time the preppy trend was out and she needed more edgy clothes..... Well, I got out there and it wasn't too bad. I just have no idea what to buy for people. So, in the coming weeks, I will find an evening when I am not too tired from work and spend a few hours in a book store (I qualify for a 10% off day at B&N). Except you, HTM - you get work out stuff. (PS - I bought myself socks today)

Pro 4206 Los Angeles, CA | Subject: RE: I am afraid to go shopping Let me say that black friday was a nightmare. It was my first and hopefully, but I doubt, my last time. I was chauffeur (and also a line place holder) to three girls and even getting to the outlet (60 miles away) at 7AM when the stores opened, the lot already had signs out that it was full. Also, lines were out the door of some shops that we had to line up outside some hundreds of people deep. It was like disneyland on a Saturday. Once you got into the store, I had to freaking wait in another line for the checkout. WTF? |

Agreed...but I still went a mile down the street at 5:30 am Friday morning to get my son a $100 Leap Frog Globe for $50. |

Elite 3201 South Florida | Subject: RE: I am afraid to go shopping It wasn't so bad out there for me. I wasn't planning on going out, but I ended up going around 8:15am. Maybe the crowds were already gone by then! I went to Circuit City to get the $2.99 memory card for my camera and ended up also getting the first season of Arrested Development and My Name is Earl (for with my hsband or brother) for $14.99. I went to Barnes & Noble to grab a few books for my daughter who has become obsessed with reading on her own. They didn't have a sale, but the check out girl was an old family friend of my husband's so I got a discount. Then I braved a trip to Target for normal stuff like diapers and it wasn't too bad either! The busiest place was Circuit City, but when I went to get in the long line an employee showed me another line at the car stereo area that only had one person in it. |

I KNOW I am a scrooge. I embrace it wholeheartedly. My attitude comes from working too many jobs where the holidays are nothing more than a chance for those NOT working are given free license to act like a-holes. Too many Xmases spent standing behind a cash register or a bar to enjoy this time of year. My wife dragged me to a Wal-Mart Friday afternoon, but that was so that she could figure out what was wrong with her sewing machine. There were no crowds where we were at (thank the lord above). From the end of Halloween until after Easter, I am in a constant state of stress over family and in-laws and everything else. Plus, there's the traffic, and the seemingly increased level of general stupidity and lack of concern for anyone else that seems to accompany these holidays. |

I agree with all of that. I also would like to add that the trying to accommodate all the family stuff gets very tiring very quickly. That alone makes it all a major pain in my @$$. "What are you doing for the holidays?" "What's on your list this year?" "Are we going to get to see you on Christmas, or wait till after like always?" Just. Friggin'. Shoot. Me. |

I can relate! What's even worse is to have family members who already have everything so it makes gift giving a little difficult, and this is particularly true when the gift recipient doesn't have any hobbies, interests, etc. Add to that family members who tell you they don't want anything for Christmas, and insist that you not buy anything for them, but on Christmas Day they are visibly disappointed in not receiving a gift. |

Champion 7542 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: I am afraid to go shopping There was shopping Friday??? Up about 8, breakfast then over for a swim with my brother (WSM9363). Met up with dad for lunch (texas barbeque) then on to Columus (OH) to see my sister's house (and her, but she and her family were at Thanksgiving the day before). A couple of hours at the zoo (as it was getting dark, and some of the animals were getting active) then back to her house for dinner before returning to mom's about 9:45 (PM). (I've done the 6-A-M-fight-the-crowds-for-a-bargain once or twice. Last year, we put our stuff down and walked out of Best Buy empty handed because I wasn't going to wait in THAT line for another hour.) |
