Not a Coach  11473     Media, PA |  Subject: New race distance/series coming next yearThought people might be interested in this: http://www.trioneoone.com/ Perhaps a little more managable than an iron distance, but still definately "going long"--3km/130km/30km or 101.06 miles. Looks like they are going to compete with both IM & 70.3. Hope it works. More choices = good! |

I agree the more choices the better, but like any other race of this distance, if it's not well supported or organized, it won't last. It's the distance for Worlds Long Course and we are the only country that doesn't race the distance on a regular basis. In order to qualify for Worlds you have to either do it at one of the USAT designated Iron Distance races or Half Iron Distance. This should improve our performance at Worlds and provide a way to qualify where you actually race the distance. |

It will be hard to compete with the IM machine, though there does seem to be plenty of demand for quality long-distance races. If they can deliver the quality, it may become an interesting alternative. Though it will obviously never have the "romantic" allure that IM has thanks to its history. |

My sentiments exactly ... competition is good for race organizations too. The IM organization can be kind of imperial in their approach to the sport (and athletes). Another well run and organized race series would only make the sport that much better. |

I'll be stunned if this isn't a major success. They also seem to have their merchandising and marketing in place. Good luck to them, competition for our dollars is a good thing! |

The thing with that distance is that it's not quite the 'slower' pace yourself of an IM but not the 'pushing really hard' of a 70.3. Notice the use of quotes!! I found it harder to figure out that distance than the IM distance. Granted, I have limited IM experience (one). But going into LC worlds, I wasn't sure how to tackle it. And it should be interesting because ITU is shortening LC to 2X Olympic distance. So if the rest of the world follows, then here we are behind the 8 ball again. |

Expert 2547 The Woodlands, TX | Subject: RE: New race distance/series coming next year I sat in on the press conference as the Championship race will take place about 1 mile from my home. Having known about this series for about 3-4 months now I can tell you that they have been taking the right steps in the planning, and some seemingly deep pockets for marketing. There were also some notables at the press conference who are 100% on board with this (Dan Empfield being one of them), giving this series some street cred. The timing couldn't have been more perfect either as the ITU has divorced itself from all long distance racing, and has changed the "long" distance they will sanction to 2X Olympic. This left a lot of pros and long distance specific age groupers with nowhere to go(other than IM). The Championship with have 150k in prize money and a number of the big pros have already committed. They also announced at the end of the press conference that they have already had a number of people had signed up while they were speaking! I personally think that this is a great fit for our sport as it is a nice stepping stone for those who are hoping to compete in an Ironman one day. Going from 1/2 to a full IM is a big jump. The plan is for the Championship to be forever placed here in The Woodlands, and after 3 years, qualifying will be the only way in (I don't know if that means slots like IM races or not). I have sworn off IM races for at least five years and now I hear about this race in my back yard! I will probably race it this year so I don't regret it, and down the road if it grows the way everyone thinks it will (20 races worldwide in 2008) I can saw I have done the race before I have to travel all over just to qualify. I personally don't think that there will be much competition with WTC (Ironman). IM races sell out in a day and this distance is not quite as brutal. I think two big race series can coexist this days as the demand is so strong. tj |

Extreme Veteran 471 Northern Virginia | Subject: RE: New race distance/series coming next year where did they come up with this distance? i thought the long course distance is 4km/120km/30km... i can't decide if i like it or not. i am always happy to have more races, but it's such a strange distance. it's kind of like opening up a series of 6k's when i'm looking for more marathons. it certainly isn't "taking the multisport world by storm" with 4 total races, but i hope it does well and becomes a great series. the more the better and someday i'm sure i'll be tired of running those final 7+ miles and want something shorter. |

Old timers will remember, for those new to the sport, we used to have the triple crown in triathlon and all three were extremely big deals. USTS Nationals (Olympic distance), The Nice World Championships, and Ironman Hawaii. The three were about 2 months apart and a bunch of pros would attend all three. The big four gained immortality at the triple crown (Mark Allen won Nice 11 times). It's also the previous ITU long course distance (swim might be a little short as I was thinking it was 3.8k in ITU. Could be wrong though) I think the reason that they are claiming to take the tri world by storm is the fact that ITU, thinking they had the pros cornered, dropped there long races. This left pros and and some top age groupers either racing olympic or the new "long", or race a couple Ironman's per year. This thing pops up and the professional union (or those not racing for the Olympics)basically dumped ITU for this new series. I find it very interesting. From our standpoint, I doubt it will take us by storm, but will certainly pump a more interest and money into our little sport. |

It is hard to compete with the Ironman machine It's got some solid backing if you dig into who's behind the series. HFP Racing is not a new or shoddy management group. They already put on some *great* races and certainly aren't just some new startup. |
