Anyone used this program. It looks like a great training program but seems that the workouts are rather short. I am overweight, 260# but have done centuries before (last year) and was a high school swimmer (10 years ago)

Can I extend the workouts a little to burn some weight off too?

hehe..usually get the response that they are too long.  but u DO have a great base already with the century....not sure if u maintained any swimming.  yeah, it may seem a little easy with your background...BUT just be cautious with the run.  cycling will help u immensely as a base but being overweight, i would def stick with the run part of the plan if u have no running experience...u can keep your same type of current cycling training, no more than 3x week i would say.  get a good pair of running shoes fitted by a runners shop too.  listen to your body.  we just want u to be safe.  if leg/feet problems, another option would be to do the couch to 5k to build up your run more conservatively...but prolly not necessary.

good luck.

Ron,

I probably do about 80-100 miles a week on the bike (lately) and today I swam an easy 600 yards with not much difficulty.

I agree with your run philosophy. Being a big guy with exercise enduced asthma, I get the lower lung type of attack when running over a mile. I do go out for about 20 min jogging/walk but mostly jogging. The run will be the most difficult and what I fear the most so this program as written will be a good build up.

That's cool, if I can extend the other parts for weight loss purposes, that would be great. I thought about just increasing everything 10% from the start.

This is a five month program, if I start now, does that mean I'll peak in Feb? Not good for Indiana triathlons

Thanks

Hi Ron,

I am a big guy too - 5' 9", 232 lbs (down from 310 two years ago) - a newbie with a solid biking background. I average about 210 K (130 miles) a week on the bike.
With no experience in swimming I envy your easy in the water - it is a travail for me to even eek out 300 meters in the water.
Running is not as hard as swimming but getting the breathing right has been the most difficult thing so far - after about 1 mile the wheezing sets in with me too.
I have been working up by breaking up the run into run/walk/run/walk segements gradually increasing the run distances but keeping the walk distances to exactly 300 paces (not steps).
I don't know if that will help, but it is working for me.
My goal is to do my first tri in June in Mont Tremblant, Quebec.

Take care.
