I am doing a race where the water will be cold. I want to purchase a swim cap to keep me warm. I am sure the race has designated caps. Do you put two caps on?

Are you required to even wear the designated race cap anyway or can you use whatever you feel like?

Thanks

I do believe you must at least wear the colour of you wave.

I've double-capped before, mind you I didn't have a wetsuit so the water was still bloody cold.

You always have to wear the designated cap for the race.  That's how they tell what wave you are in.  You can put yours underneath or buy a neopreme cap for under it.

But you have to wear the race gap given you on the outside.

Cali 70.3?  Yes it will be freakin cold!  Last year I wore two race caps with my wave's color (pink but lets not get into that) on top.  This year I bought one of the neoprene caps and fully intend to use it.

Unfortunately none of this keeps your face warm when you stick it into 53 degree water.  Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!

2nd (or 3rd) the neoprene cap under you color coded one. I wore it in 58-60 degree water and it made a huge difference.  Now if I only wuda had sleeves on my ws Surprised

I swam the alcatraz invitational this sept,  water temp about 68 deg.   I bought a neoprene cap ( $24.00) and had no problem wearing the event cap over it.  Most people swimming the event had a neoprene cap ( even the guys not wearing wetsuits) as well as using the wax or silicone ear plugs.  They keep your head from freezing due to the sloshing of cold water it the inner ear.  I highly recommend the ear plugs.

soloryder - 2007-01-17 4:03 PM  I highly recommend the ear plugs.

Good point. Interestingly I always wear mine, regardless of water temps. I like the fact that it blocks out all of the noise around me (even compounded w/ the neo cap).  Just keeps me in my own little world. Plus you should always "race like you train"  Wink

You just like being in your own world!  Admit it.

When I swam in Aquatic park (San Fran) I wore 2 swim caps and it was the worst 3 min of my life.  After that, your face and feet get numb and it's nothing different than a normal swim.

For CA 1/2, I wore a neoprene cover, with the race cap over, with ear plugs. Still freaking cold though.

I admit it. But you seem to have lots of "worst 3 minutes of my life".  This, the rain at IMWI, Disney Marathon, etc, etc. Toughen up a little wud ya  or just get into your own little world and stop complaining Wink
