Subject: Sports drinks
In preparation for my planned but as yet unsigned up for 1/2 IM next month, I've been experimenting with various sports drinks. My stomach is much touchier than I would've given it credit for it seems.

Gatorade doens't seem to have enough go power for me. Accelerade felt a little heavy in my stomach alone, although I don't recall if I had any really serious upset from it. Cytomax is just nasty. So I tried a 50-50 mix of Acelerade and Gatorade which worked well on a couple of training rides, but I noticed as I drank more of it and my intensity level went up I was having some cramping and, uh, other issues. I used it yesterday in my race and my stomach sent me the big red flag warning ...by the run I was badly cramped and it sorta destroyed my run time I'm afraid. (My asthma didn't help matters any either. Probably neither did overdoing it on the bike. Ok leave it for the race report). Today I'm going to go back to straight Accelerade and see how I do. The problems actually seem to start when I use the drinks AND gels during the same session, even if I try to leave a few minutes between consuming the drinks and gels (washing gels down w/water of course). I can't see getting through a 1/2 IM without them both though.

I'm just wondering if anyone has anything they've tried that has worked well for them?

Cindy,

Check out the forum on personalbestnutrition.com

there is a plethora of great race nutrtion advice there

and you may want to consider more than just gels and accelrade/gatorade considering you will be out there for hours

pertpetuem and sustained energy are 2 that come to mind

Thanks John! The Perpetuem might be good since it's made by Hammer Nutrition, and I use Hammer Gel which I love. I think my problem might be in the combining of everything...something isn't mixing well.

OR...does everyone alternate these drinks with water? because I've been drinking my somewhat lighter mix and only using water to wash down the gel...maybe I should be drinking more water?

Cindy:

You might try cutting some of the gatorade with water to dilute it some. I usually buy the powdered stuff and mix it myself. The directions call for 2 scoops per gallon, normally I use about 1 1/2 scoops per gallon. I haven't noticed any effects from doing this as far as performance goes, and i've been doing it for about 10 years now

You might also want to add CarboPro. It has calories and is colorless and tasteless.
It worked for me, I added it to everything. Accelerade and water

Everyone is different, but for me, I can't have gatorade at all. Even diluted. If I do, I get cramps.

Dunno why.

What works for me is just straight accelerade. Have you tried that, rather than cut it with gatorade?

Hi Chris, yes I just came back from a ride/run, straight Accelerade. Although it wasn't nearly as bad as the mix with Gatorade, it still gave me slight cramps. I'm afraid it would be worse on a high intensity ride (today was a recovery from yesterday's race).

I'm actually getting worried about this because as many great suggestions as I've heard here, I am out of money to experiment and my 1/2 is a month away!

I have a huge thing of Cytomax that I've only used a couple of times. I quit because I just hated the flavor so much. I don't remember any cramping issues though. I guess I'll try that again!

I don't have any problems with Gatorade, I just noticed a performance improvement w/the Accelerade. Also, I tend to agree that you need protein during a workout. Maybe not tho....

edit: I just read a little about the CarboPro on PBNutrition. Sounds good, and they go on abotu it being easy on the stomach so maybe... I hate to spend $20 on a 3lb jug and have it not work. Anyone know where I can get a smaller quantitiy?
