Master 1699 Malvern, PA | Subject: vitamins and supplements? Just curious if and who takes different types of supplements and for what? I take some echinacea, glucosamine, Vitamin C, aspirin, etc. thinking about taking apple cider vinegar, zinc, garlic, and fish oil... just looking for different points of view and any testimonials as to their effectiveness or lack thereof? I've been seeing a sports chiropractor and wellness doc and he recommends a few things... Feel free to be open about your opinions
Thanks. |

Member 182 | Subject: RE: vitamins and supplements? This might have been the opening of a can of worms. I think if you eat correctly, actually, perfectly, supplements are not needed, but since life happens, I think they have their place. I take the echinacea and Vitamin c as well. I also take MSM Green Tea, fish oil (very important be it from diet or supplements). The key is that they are called "supplements" for a reason. Why they often times don't work or get abused is because they are taken as a "I can eat pure crap, and then have a multi-vitamin and everything will be all better." Not what they are intended for, and not effective. |

Veteran 115 | Subject: RE: vitamins and supplements? While I realize that vitamins and supplements can not provide the same benefits that proper diet can provide, I also realize that I never follow a proper diet no matter how good my intentions. And that is why I take a multi-vitamin, vitamin C and fiber tablets. Used to take Echinacea, but perponderance of evidence is that it does not provide any benefit. If I end up with too much of a certain vitamin or mineral in my system, my body will get rid of it. Better to have and not need then need and not have. |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: vitamins and supplements? It's true that your body will get rid of many vitamins if you have excess, but that's not the case for all of them. Some (A, D, E, and K) are fat soluble and will be stored by your body if you have excess. zenith65 - 2007-01-29 1:05 PM While I realize that vitamins and supplements can not provide the same benefits that proper diet can provide, I also realize that I never follow a proper diet no matter how good my intentions. I'm on Coumadin and have to watch my vitamin K intake which counteracts anticoagulation effects of the the Coumadin. Champion 10668 Tacoma, Washington | Subject: RE: vitamins and supplements? I hope you're at least cycling off that echinacea on a regular schedule. Staying on it all the time, it loses its effectiveness. My regimen -- I take pancreatin and chlorella, which help me keep the colitis in check. I take vitex on occasional cycles of 5 days on, two days off, for no more than 5 weeks at a time (with minimum 2 weeks off totally). This is one of thise things that helps block the transformation of testosterone to estrogen. I also take a glucosamine/MSM supplement, for the health of my joints, and a multi-vitamin, calcium/D combo, and extra C. |

Master 1699 Malvern, PA | Subject: RE: vitamins and supplements? I only take the echinachea during the winter - but this winter I've been taking the zinc as well and I've had no cold symptoms thus far (knock on wood!) not even a scratchy throat, clogged sinuses, nothing... so I'm wondering if there is anything else that anybody takes to help with other things - soreness, fatigue, etc.. |

I'm not sure of the dose since it's at home, but I can check if you want. maxmattmick - 2007-01-30 7:48 AM I only take the echinachea during the winter - but this winter I've been taking the zinc as well and I've had no cold symptoms thus far (knock on wood!) not even a scratchy throat, clogged sinuses, nothing... so I'm wondering if there is anything else that anybody takes to help with other things - soreness, fatigue, etc.. |

Elite 2796 Texas | Subject: RE: vitamins and supplements? The absolute best ways to combat soreness and fatigue are active recovery and sleep. Here's the best part: they're both free. Eat well. That will cover all of your needs. Know you basal metabolic rate and eat to support your baseline needs and your training. If you need more calories than you can eat, get a quality meal replacement shake. If you want to avoid getting sick, wash your hands. A lot. Eat well. Sleep more. Save you cash for race fees, travel, and gear. You'll get a lot more out of your money. Edited to add: I do have fish oil caps, but I only take them during weeks when I don't eat enough fish. Make sure you know how the fish oil is obtained. If it's from farm rasied fish you may be getting a nice dose of heavy metals along with your omega fatty acids. Edited by Bill 2007-01-30 10:28 AM |

Veteran 134 Laval, Quebec | Subject: RE: vitamins and supplements? Echinacea, I swear by the stuff but only take it for 10 days every couple of months or if I feel something coming. Glucosamine, I do not take it, but do give a small dose to my old dog. After a few weeks there is a noticable differance in his walk for the better, so it is doing something. I pull him off at cycles as well, and if it is too long, he will develop a slight limp again. |

From my personal experience, I would question the inclusion of creatine for an endurance athlete. It tends to make a person retain water in the muscles, adding unwanted body weight. I've also found it simultaneously dehydrates me (which is why the label always recommends drinking extra water with creatine), making me more susceptible to pulls and strains. Just my $.02. |

Master 2429 Falls Church, Virginia | Subject: RE: vitamins and supplements? I take flax and borage oil, but for the purely shallow reason that I get more compliments on my skin when I do. Other than that, I make it my mission to eat as good a diet as I can, each and every single day. Sounds corny, but it makes me happy. I'm also too broke for supplements. |

It tends to make a person retain water in the muscles, adding unwanted body weight. I've also found it simultaneously dehydrates me (which is why the label always recommends drinking extra water with creatine), making me more susceptible to pulls and strains. Just my $.02. To quote DerekL from Creatine Question Post: "There aren't any kidney problem associated with creatine use. People who don't know how to properly analyze labwork came up with that one, and it's stuck ever since for some reason. Also, the dehydration thing is so far overblow it's not even funny. Your soft tissues and vascular system are in equilibrium in terms of fluid based on a number of factors. You simply don't become intravascularly volume depleted while having adequate soft tissue hydration (in normal individuals). It's an idea that "sounds right" to people but has little truth in reality." One has to do research before deciding to use such a product, or any product, and like all supplements they benefit and react in people different ways to different degrees. I personally have been using creatine for the last 5 years, properly, and my body doesnt have a huge issue with water retention or being hydrated. I usually consume enough water throughout the day in the first place I dont see a difference. |
