Swim
Comments: fealt like my feet were on fire after getting off the bike ride and run in freezing weather going into 82 deg water. good swim though, didn't get tired at all... just concentrated on FQS and rolling vs arm/leg swimming. Transition 1
Comments: walked from the parking lot to the bike with patrick.. was in no hurry to get out on the bike. but patrick had some trouble with his bike shoes (frozen hard), so i went ahead a walked the bike out to the parking lot and rode out. What would you do differently?: speed it up a little..... Bike
Comments: feet were cold in the first 5 minutes. only person to pass me on the out portion was patrick. then near the end my chain came off the front sprocket on an uphill shift. first time this has ever happened. two more passed me as i fumbled with frozen fingers and then hard time getting my shoe cleats to line up around the toe warmers on the pedals. i did pass one back by the finish. What would you do differently?: haven't ridden my bike in three months. need more bike time in the winter. Transition 2
Run
Comments: ran with patrick. had to run with cough drops to keep the cold air from really bothering my sore throat. with all the heavy clothing, i was already wet down my back from sweat just after this short of a run. made it even more unpleasant for the upcoming bike. What would you do differently?: buy real winter workout undergear vs sweatpants and thermal shirt. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: head cold and bad sinus infection, being dressed in winter clothers for 15 deg weather, lack of riding my bike the past 3 months. Event comments: you can see from the pictures this was in the ice / snow at 17 deg, with wind chill near zero. they organized the race backwards run, bike, swim so you wouldn't be wet until the last event. stripping to swim suit outside in transition area ice / wind, not for me..... i'm now paying for doing this race with a sinus infection and cold. just made it worse... i got moved up to M45-49 under new USAT rule even though i won't be 45 until Aug. thought this would be a good thing as i'd have a better chance at age group finish vs M40-44. finished age group 4th. would have been third if my bike chain hadn't come off or if i'd taken the transitions a little more serious. the piss me off part is i would have had a 2nd in age group 40-44! just can't win !!
