So, for those of you traveling from out of town - where is everyone staying????

Any hints on the best hotel/motel???

I'll be coming in on the 21st, and probably going home after the race (assuming that I have a driver).  If no driver, I may spend another night.

This is where I stayed last year (Fountain Grove Inn, Santa Rosa, CA), rooms are clean and new, not dirt cheap, but I thought it was perfect...saw many other athletes there...one exit away from River rd which is what you drive in the am to Guerneville...

Flamingo is a great place to stay with great prices and that kitschy feeling (but in a good way) and you can't beat the location. http://www.flamingoresort.com/

some people stay at the vineyard creek http://vineyardcreek.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jspi think they did the sign in there one year (maybe they still do).

i bet the vineman site has some good locales as well. post here before you book b/c there are a lot of locals that peruse (okay, me and madkat) and can give you tips and tricks on where to stay and eat.

you know, if you want to make a weekend of it with the fam, may be fun to consider renting a cabinn in guerneville......you can't beat the location and if you come in early enough could check out the course (all three).

Thanks Frank and Crpadiem - these all look like good suggestions - I need to get my family to commit one way or the other - and that should make the decision a lot easier.  If they are going, the cabins at Guerneville sound really appealing - because waking up my wife at 4:00 AM in definetly NOT how I want to start  my first Half-Iron Experiance.

If they are not going, then the choices are much simpler - 4 walls and a place I wont' get my bike stolen will do me just fine.

Hopefully we can make a decision this coming week - I want to get this last little detail nailed down, then I'm ready!!!!

Oh, yea, I guess I have a little training to do first......

Guerneville is a bit, well, you have seen the movies with Burt Reynolds....I would not stay there with my family.....downtown Healdsburg yields the most points with the spouse but is expensive and book very early....

I got a pretty good rate at the Hyatt in Santa Rosa, ask for the AAA rate.

Well, I kinda committed - my wife is coming with me, and she doesn't do early mornings.  So, we have a reserrvation at a place called "Dawn Ranch Lodge", in Guerneville.  It's walking distance to the swim start, so she can see me off in the morning and then go hang back at the room for my 2 hour swim......

It was pretty inexpensive ($120) and allowed us to stay only one night.

Any horror stories about this place I "NEED" to know???

No, just don't ask for directions ;-)

I am sure it will be fine...Guerneville is besieged by the race on that morning....athletes everywhere it is quite a sight.....

I like Guerneville myself.  It's "interesting".  I'm sure you'll be fine in that hotel.  The whole economy of Guerneville (well most of it) is from tourism, even if it is granola tourism.

It would be cool if we could stage a BT dinner the night before.  We'd be willing to host at our house, if anyone is interested.

Hey MadKat,

A BT Dinner sounds really cool - I'd love to get to meet some of you, so you know to give me words of encouragement as you pass me on the bike....  It would also be good for my wife to meet some of the people that will not be racing - otherwise it will be a long day for her if she doesn't know anyone....

We will be coming up Saturday morning, pick up the race stuff, probably do one last drive around the bike and run course, and then be good to go.

Let me know the details, and what we can bring - where to go.

Thanks,

Dennis

I'd be interested in a BT dinner.  Would love to meet other BTers, and ditto what Slow&steady said about wife meeting non-racers.

Great!  We can either do it at our house (in Santa Rosa) or we can go out someplace in town for dinner (Mary's Pizza Shack has pretty good pre-race pasta, and a nice casual atmosphere).

As we get closer, we can set something up for real.

Darn, would love to meet up with some BTers before the race, but my family is coming in from the east coast to cheer me on. Hopefully I can figure out a way to meet some of you before the race.
Happy training!

It's cool.

We'll probably have friends and family in town that weekend as well.  Which means we'll be up for doing something easy afterwards too.

You're even welcome to come by our place and shower before heading home.
