I've been doing all my swim training at the local Y.   I've been told to do some open water swims, but I don't know where to go within an hour of my home (Wilmington).  Any help would be appreciated.

Hey there,

Which Y do you go to?  I think the one in downtown Wilmington actually has an open-water swim class, or at least they were going to.   It was supposed to be specifically geared for triathletes for upcoming spring/summer races.  It's been awhile since I checked it out, so maybe they canceled it?

Other than that - I've got nothing!  Sorry...but I'm interested to see if anyone else has feedback.

I frequent the Brandywine Y.  Haven't been to the downtown Y in years.  I'm jealous of their spinning classes, though!  Thanks for the info, I'll call to see if there is such an open water swim class.  Ideally, I'd just like someone to point me to a local lake, pond, or river that I can go to on my own time.

Beginning in Late May or early May (depending on weather), we will host weekly open water swim training. They are Thursday nights from 6-8 in Wenonah, NJ (about 30 minutes from the Delaware Memorial Bridge). If you go to the website cgiracing.com you can click on a link to be notified when they start. We got a great group of people, about 80-120 per session by the end, and best of all they are FREE to usat members (non-members have to buy the one day license).

We are also planning a couple of weekend swims in Maryland that will be within an hour of you. The Baltimore Tri Club does a couple within your area (Mid-Maryland Tri Club may also host them in your area).

Hope this helps and I hope to see you out there.

I'm glad I asked the question!  Regular open water swim sessions - what a great idea.  The price is right, too.  I'll check out the cgi website.

Hello, I just 'lurked' onto this thread and just wanted to thank you guys for the info on open water swims. I am planning to do the Danskin Tri in September in NJ... so it would be great to have some open water swimming experience. I just checked the cgiracing website and couldnt find a link to the swims, so I emailed the general question email address. I'll let you know if I hear back.

Also... I am a regular at the downtown (central) Y..... and yes - the spinning classes rock! but Brandywine has such a better pool. It's more than 3 lanes wide....

Have a good one!
Jen

Go to the cgiracing.com main page...click on the logo for any of the races...at the bottom of the main race page you will see "looking for open water swims?" and "click here".

That will direct you to the open water swim information. The first one's tonight...going to be chilly! Water was 60 on Monday.

During the summer a group of us swim the length of the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk (1 mile) every Friday at 6pm. We meet at Queen St. which is at the south end of the boardwalk. There are usually 7-15 people swimming plus 1 to 2 kayakers.

Check www.tridelaware.com in a couple months and the start date should be up.....but wait until April when the site is up!!!

I would love to get in on this a few times if I could make it down there.

I will be on vaca in Bethany Beach for a week starting this friday, and would love to drive up and join if the Rehobeth swims are still going on. Will there be a group out this Friday? Also, is this a serious group of swimmers, or is it more of a recreational group? I ask only because I'm not a "strong" swimmer (I've been getting closer to the back FOP, but consistently MOP) and wouldn't want to be dragging things along.
Thanks,

I live local to Rehoboth. Is there going to be a swim this Friday at 6pm on the Boardwalk? I'd love to join the group. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
