Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30, ate breakfast acai bowl, drank some gatorade.
Arrived at 5:45 set up transition, negotiated the release of the hostages, talked with some friends.
Event warmup:

10 min ride on bike. 50 meters swimming.
Swim
  • 14m 53s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

Ok, so I found out at last minute that the direction had changed from last year to clockwise, that would have sucked going wrong way! This was the first time I dedided to get in the crowd and mix it up. Got in a nice little group and did some jostling. Felt really good, sighting was really good and the feet I was on seemed to be staying on course, so all was good. Never looked at my watch once during the swim-which was a new one for me. last 150 started kicking some more to get legs ready for bike. A fun swim!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing other than becoming a better swimmer.
Transition 1
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

Practised for a while yesterday while my girls were riding there bikes at the local college parking lot. Really helped a lot and actually got the running/jump start down. Shoes went on a little slow, because I had a lot of sand on them, nothing to major though. Some improvement still can be made.
What would you do differently?:

Get feet a little cleaner.
Bike
  • 37m 40s
  • 13 miles
  • 20.71 mile/hr
Comments:

Got onto the bike and starting hammering. Felt pretty good. Right into head wind so wasn't too worried about speed. Just focused on cadence and HR. Felt pretty good through out, could have gone a little harder, not much. Should have pushed harder last few miles into wind.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder into wind esp. on finishing miles.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Another good trans.
What would you do differently?:

Jump off bike.
Run
  • 30m
  • 3.5 miles
  • 08m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Started running and knew I just didn't have it today. Felt like I was low on energy and just couldn't get motivated to run harder. I tried picking up the pace some, and was faster second half, but no real surges and finished ok.
What would you do differently?:

More training and need to eat more closer to race time.
Post race
Warm down:

30 min easy jog.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more training, just first race of season. Need to nail pre-race nutrition.

Event comments:

This was my second year doing this race. Last year it was raining for a good portion of the event. This year it was very nice except a little windy. Good organization and the overall vibe was really good. I would definately recommend it to anyone.

Nice race!  Two foot chop?  Oye.  That does not sound pleasant.  I’m glad that it was sunny on that side.  It was looking a little questionable over on the Windward side.

The chop wasn't that bad.  I don't know maybe I am used to it.  At least the current was with us most of the way.

Aloha,

Matt
