Of course another record for Phelps...but more importantly he did it in my old event....(just faster, much much faster).

I don't think Phelps will win the 100 fly though...

edited to add: His turns are freaking awesome

I'm in awe of Phelps; he is amazing in the water!!

And (related to another thread) I can't imagine a doping accusation to follow.

He's not the type and swimming has been blissfully free of doping scandals, hasn't it?!

He is a genetic mutant... or from atlantis or something.  I mean, I just can't believe that he's human.

I realize in swimming that tiny amounts of time are huge and at half a length I wouldn't consider this race close, but Phelps didn't exactly crush the guy in second either.  He had a heckuva race too.  I wonder how much that helps push  Phelps.

You don't think he's going to take the 100m even after breaking the 200m fly record by 1.8sec?

I'm wondering whether or not Phelps has that many fast swims left in him in the next two days, or if he's past his peak for this meet. In the 800FR, he led off 1.5 seconds slower than his WR in the 200fr.

Past his prime?!?   *confused look*

No, you didn't just say that about my boy, Phelps... He makes me swoon like no other 20-something (god forbid he's still a teen) I've ever seen.

Your competitive swimming knowledge compared to mine is like Sol compared to Uranus (heh heh I said Uranus) but that just sounds like he was pacing himself for the longer swim.

Two things:

That 200 lead time wasn't his first race of the day. If I did a PB in my 200bk, and had a 200fr afterwards, I'd expect to go 1sec slower than being totally rested.

Sunny -
Have you heard of the Chinese wave of doping? Look up olympic swimming medals won by each country during the past few years (I forget the year, was it 1988?). They scored about 20 medals less after they got busted.

But no, there haven't been many wrongful accusations towards doping and swimmers.

SFSC, I hadn't heard of the China scandal/doping incident, so thanks for the FYI on that.  I'll look it up.  I'd only heard of some odd testosterone doping by women swimmers on former eastern bloc countries, was it Germany?  USSR?  Anyway, it was a sad incident to be sure, and any accusation of foul play by Phelps would be even sadder.

I am also fairly sure that he was slightly slower for the exact reason you described, and there's no need to belabor that issue.  Thanks for the note, -Sunny

That's a good point. I just have a hard time thinking he's not going to start getting tired. He has a 100fl final left, as well as two 400IMs, and maybe a spot on the 400MR. That's still a lot of swimming.

Beautiful swimming, absolutely glorious.  How much discipline must it take to hold the length of the stroke like that on the b/s and free legs???

And Phelps won the 100FL

Oh, and if you want to know discipline, look at his underwater work on the last turn of his 400im. I mean I can't even do that when I'm relaxed... and my technique on that last turn is pitiful!

He set the WR for the 400IM by TWO SECONDS. lochte finished 2nd. Phelps ancestors must have crawled out of the water several million years later than the rest of us.

Yes...I was thinking the same thing. I was an IMer and distace freestyler, and the 400IM was always the most grueling race. I always felt like I was going to black out on the breaststroke pullouts, and here he is going 10m underwater on every length. I swear he must have gills.
