Subject: barefoot running - where?

I would like to run barefoot one day a week, but I don't know where.   I was thinking a treadmill, would that still have the same benefits?  I would like to find some grass, but I worry about syringes at the park I normally run at.  Where does everybody run barefoot?   Would I get any benefit out of using nike free or vibram 5 fingers?  Thanks and sorry for the 50 questions.

Even if you don't get the "full" benefit of barefoot running from the Nike Free or the Vibram Five Fingers, I think it's worth a slightly decreased benefit for the increased safety. Syringes? That's just scary gross.

On a side note, I'm skeptical that barefoot running is really all that beneficial.

Running barefoot helps strengthen the muscles in the feet and ankles. And you can run much faster IMO than with sneakers on. Plus you plant your foot differently.......(benefits are maybe you build muscles you wouldn't ordinarily build?)

Do you have a high school nearby with a running track? That would be the safest and most comfortable place to practice.

It's funny how they say it's a revolution when my dad had done it on his track team back in the early 60's.  I guess it's so because more people are starting to do it now than back in the olden days?

I do it on a treadmill in the Winter, and a track when it's warm.

I am a barefoot runner and would strongly encourage to incoporate some barefoot running into your routine.

I have been running in just my Vibrams for the past two weeks. The weather around here has just sucked so I can't run in the grass. You just have to build up your mileage slowly on harder surfaces when you first start out so that your muscles adjust to the impact. Don't measure your distance by the miles do it by the minute. Start out doing a couple minutes a day and add on from there every few days.

**If you do not allow your bones and muscles to adjust you will break your legs.**

I have been running barefoot for three years. I have been running injury free for three years. I am flat footed and have arthritis in my knees. My podiatrist says I need orthotics and I say hogwash to him. I am faster and run at a lower heart rate when I run barefoot. My cadence is faster and I find I can keep a faster cadence more consistant. I will be doing the Chicago Marathon this year in my Vibrams.

I have lots of links to barefoot running sites if you are interested.

If you do not allow time for your bone density to increase and your muscles to strengthen you will break your legs in two. That is why alot of people are turned off by barefoot running because they are sore when they initially start. Especially in the calf and achilles. People don't realize they have been wearing shoes for a number of years and you can't just kick off the shoes and run barefoot. Take the time to build up your mileage.

You can break your legs by trying to up your mileage in regular shoes too quickly.

Ask Lance about that.

For real?

Look up stress fractures.  Happens to runners all the time, with or without shoes.

Nike Free's would get you partially there. Vibram 5-fingers is really close. Some of the mesh water shoes would do the job as well, or Puma H-streets. But for real barefoot -- the beach, indoor track, outdoor rubber track, astro-turf football field... Just some ideas. I'd avoid the treadmill for barefoot running though. At least for a while.

treadmill i got told off for. not cool! i've run barefoot on a local footie pitch and on atsro pitches. i live near a training ground so its easy for me.

as for the benefits: no itb issues since i started barefoot. then again that may be because i have hardly run...?!?

am looking into vibram five fingers next as i will need to get out on the road once i build my endurance up.

Oh, like shin splints?  I was thinking of something much more dramatic and extreme like major breaks, LOl.

I've had shin splints and they are no fun indeed.

I would want to see them in person before purchasing them. Make sure they are durable and are going to last. If you can squeeze a summers worth of running out them great. If you have to buy a new pair every couple of weeks forget it.

I run barefoot on the beach occasionally.  Haven't broken my legs so far.

ta! that is my problem. i live in manchester and the two vibram stores and this surf shop are way, way down south. also i think my freaky feet are the wrong lengths for the five fingers - i.e. second tow longer than first, and one foot significantly bigger than the other.

maybe i'll try o'neills surf shop in manchester or decathlon and go from there.

thanks rowdy
