Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4am...I got dressed and made my emergen-C mix. Went to pick up my friend Lisa and we drove to Brooksville together. I ate a snickers marathon bar about 1 1/2 before the race start and drank 1/2 a red bull. Nothing unusuall for me. It was a cool morning so I had a L/S dri-fit shirt on with my Snickers singlet over the top of it.
Event warmup:

We arrived just in time to see one of my running friends start the 50 miler. Then Lisa and I just sat in the car talking and keeping warm. We took a short jog to the start. Enough warm-up for me! :)

Comments:

This run was amazing..I had so much fun! We had 5 people in our group and we were hoping to say together in a pack the entire way. One older gentlman Chuck was going for a course record in his age group. He had to break 2:30. I ended up in the front when we started and I usually am a fast starter so the pace was good for everyone. Around mile 5 I noticed my hands were a bit puffy..but I just was like "whatever" and thought nothing of it. I warmed up fast so I took off my shirts and tied the L/S around my waist and put the singlet back on...perfect! I drank some gatorade at the 1st of only 2 aid stations...I remained at the front of the pack..everyone was happy with the pace and I was navagating the trail well and we had not been lost at all...bonus! We ran through 'Bundy's pit' (Ted Bundy the killer had put a few bodies there) kinda cool in a creepy way. Around mile 10 we reached the 2nd and last aid station. I ate 1/4 of a banana, some little quaker bar thing and 1 gatorade and 1 water cup. i was still in the lead by mile 12 then the climbs started. we had been climbing a bit but the were all packed dirt so not too difficult. The last 3 miles were mostly uphill with a few drops but all sugar sand and roots. this is when I started to feel bad. Mile 13 to 14 my stomach stared really talking to me so I was forced to slow down or..well you know! By miles 14 to 15 my stomach was a mess, my handslooked like something from the Nutty Proffessor and my right leg dod not want to move anymore. With a mile left the entire group I had paced for the 1st 13 miles passed me and that was a bit of a downer for me. i was so strong the entire race and I was unhappy that I was not finishing strong. I pulled it together for the last 1/2 mile and pushed as hard as I could. i finished like a minute and 1/2 behind Lisa. :( The guy Chuck finished at like 2:17 or so smashing the course record for his age group..I was happy about that and he kept thanking me for setting such a strong steady pace. That made me feel good...except that I wanted to finish in front of him not behind! I am so competitive ;)

What would you do differently?:

I am still not sure what I did wrong!!!! I guess I will have to pay more attention to my hydration and electrolytes.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around trying to figure out what was wrong with me and one guy saw my hands and said.."go drink more gatorade" so I did and I ate some chips..yummmy salt :) I will spare you the bathroom details. ;)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I could not have gone any faster the 1st 13 miles...I guess I just need to be more aware of my body or something. I have alway taken a simple approach to racing..looks like I may need to pay more attention to the details so to speak.

Event comments:

I loved this run..no frills but a blast. I will do it again as soon as I can..I love trail runs :)

Sounds great! I have always wanted to do Croom. I get emails from a group of regulars that do it on the weekends, but I have yet to go up there.

I guess next time you will have to bring more liquids with you. Bummer that you bonked like that, but sounds like for those 13 miles you were spot on, girl!

I thought your RR title said the "John Holmes" trail run.  LOL!!!

Good run, despite the explosion at the end. Two aid stations in 15 miles isn't much; if you weren't completely topped off beforehand, I could see where you could blow.  Four words for you:  En-dur-o-lytes.   Congrats again!!!

Great job considering there were so few aid stations. That's really surprising but you did very well. Maybe if I'm around some year during that time, I'll look the race up. Sounds like you had a great time and helped that gentleman smash the course age group record. Way to go!

NICE WORK!!!  Electrolytes will pull ya thru.  Maybe you can try my gel-a-mile trick? LOL  Glad you had a good time doing it.  Trail runs are so much fun.  Just wait til Dances With Dirt...twice as long, and 100 times as dirty...10000 times the fun!!!

Congrats on a great race!

Impressive! Even with hydration issues, you still kept your average under 9:30 min miles. That's awesome, Betsy!

Great job.

Great race Betsy! You just pat yourself on the back and order some electrolyte caps! Trail running is so much fun, I love it! Maybe one day I'll try this one after reading your report, it sounds like fun. Glad you're all back to normal now and getting ready for St. A's!
