Subject: IM with a Garmin?

Thinking ahead to September, I'm trying to figure out what to do about my HRM.

Garmin says the 305's battery will last about 10 hours. Does anyone have experience with doing an IM distance tri with a Garmin? How long will the battery actually go? I'm worried about the battery dying on me somewhere out on the run course.

My wife has a Garmin 305 as well, so I was thinking I might have to switch out Garmin's in T2. Or I could just wear mine until it dies. 10 hours in, I'll probably be slowing to a crawl anyway, so HR may not matter much.

I used my Timex HRM on the bike since I had the benefit of my bike computer to give me pace/distance.  I switched to my Garmin in T2 for the run.

If you have access to 2 Garmins that's probably the way to go.  I used my 305 on an early season  200km ride Saturday and it gave me a low battery warning after about 8 hours.  I charged it while I was riding, using a USB battery pack in my bento box.  But I don't think it would have made it the full 10 hours that Garmin advertises.

I'm doing Ironman Canada in August.  I'm probably going to use my Forerunner 201 on the swim (remove the strap and put it in a zip-lock under the swim cap), then my 301 on the bike, and my 305 on the run.  I'd say the GPS data uploaded onto Motionbased is more important to me than the finisher t-shirt.

If it is a loop course and you have the speed/cadence sensor, you can turn the GPS off after the first loop. You will still get speed/distance/HR/time recorded on the 305, but not the GPS tracks. All you really need is one loop of GPS tracks anyway. The GPS is what sucks up most of the battery.

The second Garmin in T2 is a good idea as well.

The best solution is to just finish in less than 10 hours

Good question.

I plan to do the same ... given the information available with the bike computer, I only need to know my HR number - so I'll use the low end Polar I have.

I do, however, want the GPS functionality of the Garmin during the run.  I have become addicted to the pace/hr information.

I used my timex watch for the swim.  When I got to T1 I had my Garmin in my gear bag and I put that on, and put my timex (while still running with the clock time) in the pocket of my tri top. I used the Garmin for most of my bike until mile 75ish.  Then I turned it off (to conserve the battery for the run) because I had a feel for my HR (stayed in Z1) and I had my bike computer for speed.  Toward the end of the bike I turned it back on so it would get a signal in time for the run portion.  For the run I used the Garmin for pace and HR info.  When I got mile 18ish It showed low battery but lasted me for the rest of the marathon.  I had my timex in the back of my trip top if I wanted to see what the clock time was.  It was too much for me to estimate the clock time in my head at that point in the race. I was glad to have my Timex with me as back up up just in case the Garmin gave out.

if you want good GPS info for garmin I would get the edge 305 for the bike and use the forerunner for the run. I used it during 50ks and such and never hada problem at 8 hours but not sure how much longer it would last beyond that.

Edge has better attitude information since it calulates itself and does not use the gps altitudes.

I would not worry about the swim so much with the garmin. If your worried about the cut off time rememebr its based on clock time so why not have the clock displayed. All you need to know is at what time your cut offs are and you are golden.

Thanks all for the input.

It sounds like the 2 Garmin approach is my best bet. It makes more sense to me than buying a low end HRM just for the bike. I already have 2 305's, only logical that I use them both (with the wife's permission to use hers, of course). I may take a minor time hit when I turn them on in transition, but I can get my stuff on while they sync up. I'm just aiming to finish the race.

I don't even plan on wearing a watch on the swim. All that would do is have me calculate finishing times in my head, and that's a trap I don't want to get into with my first IM.

If you are using two 305's, the make sure they are both coded to the same chest strap before the race.  You don't want to have to change chest straps in T2.

That sounds good to me. making sure you make the cut offs is all I would worry about and hopely that will not be an issue but you never know.

Is there a way to do that after they've already been coded to different ones? I don't mind taking the time to change straps, but if I can save a minute...

It's actually so fast you could do it as you head out of T2, but it is better to have them set up before hand.  You just go through the menu to accessories and have it scan for the HRM.  It will find it in a few seconds.  It's a piece of cake.

Interesting question.  I am not sure, but I thought there was a way to change how often the Garmin polls the GPS?  If that could be modified, that would add to the life of the battery.  If not, I like the idea of turning it off all together on the bike....

The data recording mode doesn't affect battery life.  It just affects how long it takes to use up the trackpoint memory.  You can set the data recording to record data points  "Every Second" or "Smart Recording".  The limit is 3.5 hours of data at 1 point per second.  In Smart Recording mode you should be able to capture a 15-17 hour Ironman if you can keep the battery charged.

My experience is that once you get the battery warning you get another 1.5 - 2 hours of use before she dies. I have gone a full 10 hours with the 305 on various bike rides.

I like your concept of recharging via a USB battery pack seems like a good idea but how do you get the 305 to stay on the usb cradle to charge while on the bike... I can hardly keep it on while recharging on a desk. Any time I jar the desk the thing disconnects.

I strapped the cradle in between the watch and my polar bike mount before the ride. So the watch strap basically held it all together.   And I put some tape over the Mini-USB hole in the cradle in case of rain.

I tried that tonite and it works....thanks.... I'm doing a 200 mile a day crossing from San Diego to Savannah, GA in June with PACTOUR and I was looking for a way to recharge the 305 in-transit. I think you have provided the key...The alternative was to do a -10 hour double 15 days in a row.

HA! I got a story for you. Yesterday, on my death march at IMAZ, I chated with a girl that her garmin died on the bike course. I'm not sure it died because of battery or just because it broke but she said it got stuck at 15.4mph on the screen. From there on, she had to keep asking the aid stations what time it was. No personal experience though.

That was me. The stupid thing wouldn't even shut off after my husband picked up my bike. It froze 43 minutes into the bike.

My next IM I'm wearing a watch just in case.

Next time leave the watch at home and press MODE and Lap/Reset at the same time... Should take care of your problem....
