Subject: Total Newbie bike question....

My husband offered to buy me some gizmo to measure my performance on the bike for my b-day, but I have no clue what that might be.  I read several threads that said to focus on cadence, not speed.  What do I need to do that?  I have a Garmin Forerunner 350 for running and know there is a bike add-on.  Is that a viable option? others?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Suzy

There is an equivalent to the Garmin 305 for the bike; it functions like a traditional bike computer but adds in heart rate and GPS functionality. Of course he could just be talking about a simple bike computer that measures speed and distance.

Or maybe he went totally overboard and bought you a PowerTap or SRM.

Not sure what you're talking about here, the Forerunner 305 (there is no Forerunner 350) has HR and "GPS functionality." It has a cycling mode; I use my 301 (the predecessor) on the bike all the time, it's a great training tool for both sports.

Garmin also makes the cycling-specific Edge 305 which has available (for extra cost) sensors for HR and cadence. IMHO, if you have the Forerunner 305, the Edge 305 is mostly redundant. If you want cadence, buy the $35 Cateye Astrale 8 bike computer.

If I had the Forerunner 305 and wanted to add a performance-measuring gizmo, I'd go with a power meter like the Powertap or Ergomo.

I was speaking of the Edge. Just couldn't remember what it was called.

Again, mostly redundant if you have the Forerunner 305. $400 just to have cadence is a little much.

You can easily order the Garmin cadence meter to use with the 305, that's what I do.

Goes for about 40$.

Holy crapSurprised, I never knew bike technology could be so expensive.  And I thought my Seven was like taking out a mortgage.  A powertap looks interesting, but probably more than this junior biker would be willing to fork out this year.

PS. I screwed up, I do have the Garmin 305, not 350.

Nice option. Get that and a bike mount for the Forerunner and you'll be good to go. Then save for the powertap.

ps, looking at your logs I'd have to advise you to get a bicycle first. Cool

The sad truth is I have an awesome bike, custom Seven (given my size), but I put it away for the entire winter to focus on swimming and running.  It won't come out of hibernation until after my Spring marathon. After that, it is biking most of the summer and fall.

the only real difference between the edge and forrunner is that I think edge mounts better to the bike and has a build attitude measuring device (I forget the exact name sorry). Unless you have a computrainer and want to make your own courses chances are the forrunner will be just fine.

having both could also be useful in something like a HIM or IM where you could run the risk of running out of battery power for either stage.

I would beg for the computrainer. .

Could be just an odometer.  Some, like my Cat Eye,  do come with cadence readout capability and are far less expensive than the Garmins.

I have a Cateye Astrale on my bike and it measures everything (well, except power) cadence, distance, speed, etc.  It's great and wasn't too much money.

All this other stuff sounds like fun but you gotta consider the $$ too.
