I've decided to do a few triathlons this summer because it's something I've mulled around for a while....and now I'm really excited about it! I've never been much of an athlete, but I feel totally encouraged by everything I read....it sounds like no one will be boo-ing me for being the last one in )

I fully admit that I will be the last one across the finish line because I have a small bit of torn cartilage in one knee (doctors won't operate on it because it's small and I'm only 26), but I'm still pumped for training!

Welcome to the nut farm!  If anything, You will find that the last few people to cross the line will get more cheering than any other in the race!

Train how you can with that knee to stay healthy, and you'll quickly find out you are hooked!

Welcome!

There's no shame in being the last one across the line. In fact, there's a saying...

DFL>DNF>DNS - "Dead freakin' last" is better than "did not finish" is better than "Did not start". So just by toeing the line, you're a winner!

Hope you enjoy your time here at BT and in the "BOP" (Back of the Pack)... it's where all of us cool kids are.

Welcome and congratulations on finding the most amazing sport with the most amazing people!  I can't think of other athletic events where the competitors cheer for eachother while competing!  Really, this weekend I had a disappointing race, and the encouragement the other competitors gave while I struggled was the best.  You will feel welcomed and included in any of the events you chose to do and you will be great!

I hope I get a toaster for brining a newbie on board. I met Casey at my tri yesterday. She was volunteering but was already training for the next tri- Minneman in June. She does not know it but I will be there when she crosses the finish line- hell I might be right next to her.
your weight and your gear does not matter, all that matters is your heart, if you have heart you will also finish anything you start.

glad you are here! BGT

Keep at it.

When I start triathlons I had a chronic bad knee caused by a high/low block that hyperextended my knee and dislocated my kneecap.

Because of triathlon my knee has felt better than it has since I was 18.

that's encouraging. I did manage to get 3.1 miles in on the treadmill, about 15 minutes of it was a slow jog, the rest walking....running actually feels better on my knee than walking most of the time (I must have a better running gait than walking!).

Thanks for the warm welcomes!

I recommend a Danskin triathlon for your first one. The camraderie and good vibes are amazing. If there is one near you, I highly recommend it!

I'm doing Danskin as my second tri! I really want the medal, which is really a huge part of the appeal. It's going to be a bit rough since it's about a week after my first one....but I'll take the first one pretty easy, then I'll have a personal best to beat!!

Casey, welcome aboard BT.  You say that you have a chunk of cartilage missing from your knee.  Just strengthen the muscles around your knees with excercise ... like cycling and slow running.  I have no cartilage in my left knee and the right one is torn right down the middle and I still log in lots of kilometrage on the bike and run.  I even plan on doing an IM this September.  It's just a matter of pulling back when you feel and pain or stop altogether.  You can always pick it up "tomorrow".

Welcome, and I hope you find triathlon to be as physically and mentally rewarding as most of us do. And, just so you know, those of us at the back of the pack get the most applause and have the most fun! Good luck!
