I want to do this as my first International distance - does anyone have experience there and feedback on the course? Is it blasting hot there in July? What kind of surf? (the 2006 photos didn't look too bad). How about closest town to stay in nearby?
I've done 4 sprints since last Sept and am ready to step up the training and go for the longer distance.

thanks!

I am signed up as well. It will be my first Intl. dist too. I don't much about the swim and run but the bike is the standard Camp Pendleton route that is very popular for training. You can head south and park at Las Pulgas and scope the course. Bring your ID so you can get through the gates. The Marines are very supportive of cyclists....as long as you follow the rules. Check out the Camp Pendleton website for bike route info.

i plan on this being my first tri. however i have ridden the course more than enough times. i do most of my rides on this course and i ran the devil dog duathlon. that being said there are a few rolling hills. but for every up hill there is a nice downhill to follow. as long as youve been doing some hill work this course isn't bad at all. there isn't one hill that will kill you. so good luck and i should see you there.

Hey All-

Camp Pendleton is a great race! The swim is in the Del Mar Basin. Not the cleanest water (as with most harbors in the San Diego area) but not too bad. It's protected, so no waves. Be prepared for a long T1. You have to run across the beach and through the parking lot. Probably close to 1/4 of a mile.

The bike is pretty straightforward. Just a couple rollers

The run is 2 loops near the Del Mar basin area. Last year was REALLY hot and sunny, especially for San Diego. Luckily there was a really good looking Marine with a fire-type hose that you passed 4 times on the run.

All in all, this is a great race!

I'm thinking of doing this one, depending on how my training goes -- it will be my first tri! But to answer your questions, San Diego usually isn't too hot in July. Sometimes we'll have random heat waves and it will be 90* in the afternoon, but usually it's cool in the morning and by the water (in fact, I've been to the beach wearing a jacket in midday in July before). August-October are actually the hottest months. The good thing is even if it's hot we hardly ever have humidity. I'm not sure about the surf but the water is usually about 70*. They air surf reports with the weather every morning so you should at least be able to find out the day of, though. Camp Pendleton is a vast expanse of nothingness, but if it's on the Del Mar side there should be hotels nearby in that region. The oceanside-carlsbad area ares also pretty close.

I'm not adding much to help... just wanted to say I will be there too for my first Oly.

I live (well, will be living) in Twentynine Palms and planned on crashing at a buddy's house in the SD area the night before.

I hear GREAT things about the race! Hopefully we can do a BT meet before or after.

Is anyone doing the sprint there in August?

I was thinking this race or the Carlsbad sprint a week earlier.

Any input from those who have done both would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ken

I highly doubt that is going to happen. Save me a cold refreshment at the finish!

A fairly easy course as far as Olympics go. Fairly straigt forward. Swim is an in-water start and the water is kind of nasty, but not too bad. Like someone said before, after exiting the water for the swim you have to run a 1/4 mile just to get to transition. Bike is an out and back, couple of hills, but pretty flat for the most part. I don't think there are any aid stations as I can remember The run is kind of an out and back with a loop in the middle. You do this twice and there seems to be a decent amount of aid stations. Best thing is that the price is hard to beat.

See you guys there. If anyone wants to train on base, let me know. I live on Pendleton and it would be easy to meet up and run the course a few times.

Good luck Everyone

I am out of town this weekend but will be wishing that I was there to cheer everyone on.

Will catch up with some of you either in Carpinteria or at Ironman California 70.3 in the Spring.

Cheers
