Subject: Stupid Question About Qualifying for IM's & 1/2 IM's
Hi everyone,

although I haven't actually done a triathlon yet, I do plan on doing tons of Sprints and Olympics in the near future

Anyway, I do have the intention of doing 1/2 Ironmans and eventually a full length Ironman race, once I have built up the necessary training (which will of course, take a few years or so). Anyway, I'm a bit confused as to "qualifying" for an IM or 1/2 IM? I mean, do you have to complete a certain amount of Olympic-distance Tri's to qualify for 1/2 IM's, and then complete the 1/2 IM's with a certain ranking to advance to the full IM's? Or would that specifically be only for the Hawaii 1/2 IM and full IM? I'm confused

You only have to qualify for "championship" races.  For IM, this means Kona.  For HIMs this means, for example, the 70.3 WC in Florida or USAT Halfmax.  There are also sometimes other ways to get into some of these races as well (e.g. lottery or general entry).

But basically, to your question, you can do a half or full iron distance race whenever you can pay the entry fee to get into the race.  Doing some sprints & olys first is a good idea though.

Here is a link to the Q&A section of the ironman.com website.  Might help with a few questions about Kona http://www.ironman.com/mediacenter/faq

Also, practice your  phone speed dialing skills    Many IM events fill up a year in advance in literally hours when registration open the day after the current year's event (in most cases)   Good luck

Thanks for clearing it up for me. And I'm not going to worry about this sort of stuff right now, seeing as how I don't even have a Sprint done under my belt yet
