Some of us are planning a Sunday May 20 open water (sortof) swim at Hillsdale lake at 3:30 - 4 pm. Dont know how long we will be there; probably until the last person gets tired.  If you want to ride with me from the Switzer/127th area drop me a pm. Otherwise the cost is $4.00 a car, payable at the self-service kiosk at the entrance to the state park. Caution: there are 2 beaches; you do not want the Windsurfer Beach.

Here are my notes on the lake I sent to other BTers.

I went out to Hillsdale lake, talked to the rangers
then went out to the beach area.  Here is what I
found:

There is a nice sandy beach with beach house we can
use from dawn to dusk 7 days a week

The sandy beach is currently submerged due to all the
rains but is usuable; it's just a little deeper and
sandier on the bottom.

The beach area is cordoned off by a continuous bouy
line that is currently out about 75-100  feet from shore.
The line extends across the mouth of the bay-beach for
100-150 yards. Beyond the solid buoy there are some
more single buoys warning boats off the area.

My recommendation would be to do laps following the
outside of the continuous buoy line and returning back
following the inside of the buoy line.  This would
give the swimmer something to hold onto either to the
left or right in case of difficulty and give you about
a 300  yard lap.  I am not sure how deep it is out at
the buoy but I suspect about up to ones chin in normal
conditions, a little deeper now.

The season is open there now so you could swim this
weekend after work, etc. The cost is $4 a car unless we
buy a season pass for 1 vehicle at 24.

It's about a 30 minute drive out there from my house  I can take
4 people from my house in the 127th Switzer area. I think I already
have Veganman and LindaKc. so I still have space for 2 mor.

I checked with Shawnee Mission Park and Kill Creek
park and their swimming areas dont open until June 2.
I'm thinking do Hillsdale for the Heritage tri then
move to SM when it opens.

For those who might want to meet us out at Hillsdale at approx 3:30 - 3:40 pm, the beach area is on the North side of the dam, first road on the right side after crossing the dam if you are coming up from Hillsdale. Follow the beach signs to the left.

If you are driving you will have to stop at the kiosk and buy a $4 sticker for the car.  If you want to get in free, bring your bike and leave your car at the Corp of Engineers visitors station just south of the dam, then ride the 1.5-2 miles to the beach. It's all asphalt road.

I will probably bring a cooler with bottled water for those who cant get enough of the water.

Occasionally, it's SBD - "Sweet, beautiful, darling." Sometimes confused with "Silent but deadly!"

That's why I'm doing it. I don't have a wetsuit, so I need to make sure I can stand the water temp without one. Byron (geezerjock) said the Big O was about 65* and he thought it was ok. There was a guy there that did it in a Speedo. All the rain will probably make it a little cool, but maybe it will warm up a few degrees before Sunday.

LindaKC and the Geez will probably bring their wetsuits.

FYI - did a little research:

For the time period Apr 1 to yesterday last year averaged 3.4 degrees warmer than this year.
The last two weeks, this year has been 9.6 degrees warmer than last year.

Water should be warmer, but rains might have debunked this hypothesis.

I was at Big O and yes, 2 guys did it without wetsuits, but had obvious chillblane when they emerged. It was bitter cold.

Some of us have DOM living with us so this is an attempt to get away.  Well.,. not really. Mom is 87, vertical and possesses all her cognitive abilities.  She just appreciates not being in a nursing home and with real people.  She likes to see Sonny stay in shape!!

We had a successful swim on Sunday. I must highly recommend getting out for OWS whenever possible. What a great time. I'll be switching from the Heritage Dual to the Tri!!

Thinking about doing another OWS before Sunday... any suggestions on dates/times/location.  Hillsdale Lake is ok but it's kind of far.  Use it as a last resort!!

I'm thinking Lake Olathe from where the HIM started... anchoring my floating tube out 200 meters and swimming laps from shore out and back over and over.  Anyone interested??

We would be breaking the law but we could claim we are just trying to redeem our $150 entry fee for the Big-O

The bouy's from the 1/2IM are still out there as of Saturday the 12th. I definately want to get another OWS in on Saturday. Maybe one on Thus as well. You have my number and email...let me know if anyone else is interested.

I did the Hillsdale swim early sunday because of mom's day. It was VERY warm, but lots of kids. It was great because I had some real challenges in getting myself to chill out, relax my breathing and try to maintain some semblence of streamlining. Wish I had started this weeks ago!

Also, sighting was kinda challenging. I'll do Lake Olathe as long as we have a couple of folks out there for safety (big snapping turtles with fangs).

I am laughing my @$$ off!!!
Yes, turtles are dangerous, but Geezerjock reports Loch Lloyd had an alligator once...if you'd like to see it, it's stuffed in the clubhouse. Glad to hear you made it out there! I'm going to be much more relaxed come race day. See you at PLC on Tues?

I'd be up for another OW swim. Maybe not Saturday, though... I want my wetsuit to be able to dry out before the race, and give my arms a rest too.

Thursday or Friday would be good for me after work. Just let me know when you all are planning on going.
