Hey all,
I'm doing my first tri on Sept. 19th so I'm only familiar with tapering for a marathon so I want to know what should I be doing now as far as eating during taper for a tri? I just took off the last 5 punds I've been grumbling about for years so carbing up and putting on a few pounds doesn't sound great to me right now but I know I'll need some stores for the race. I'm only doing a sprint but want to do it well. What are you guys eating the week or so leading up to your races? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks.
Jen

if you are doing a sprint, i wouldn't worry so much about carbo loading. i worried about the same stuff before my races and i think it isn't as important with races that are under 2 hours. i would just eat what you normally eat. the night before, have something with some carbs (pasta, rice), but don't over-do it. for my first race i just had a clif bar in the morning, and a clif shot before the race. this time, i did a cup of oatmeal with some milk and honey, and a clif shot before the race. seemed to have more sustained energy for the second race. could be lots of reasons for that, but i'll still be sticking w/ oatmeal.

I stick with my regular routine during the week for the sprint, insuring lots of fluids the last few days. Make sure you know what your body can tolerate for food before an early morning race - but I assume you do that for marathons anyway.  I do eat an extra something (usually a bowl of Optimum cereal and milk) the night before.

Also take some extra food and fluid with you in case the start is delayed - so you are still ready when the whistle blows. I also have something (power bar) just before the swim and something (gel) in T1& T2 in case I feel I needed it.

I wouldn't make any changes to your diet unless you add just a few more carbs. A small difference of 500 calories can have a dramatic effect on some people.
