Subject: National ride your bike to work week

My bike club sent out a notice that this coming week 5/14 is national ride your bike to work week.  It sounds like the excuse I've been looking for.... So who's going to join me this week?

I haven't verified the truth of the message, I'm just taking it as a great excuse.  They suggested that if you cannot make it all week at least do Friday.

I work at home.  Maybe I can station the bike outside my bedroom and ride it the 20 feet to my office.

Denver's Bike To Work day is June 27th. I plan to figure out a way to participate! I take the bus to work and it would be a really long ride if I rode all the way in. So I figure I can ride to the bus station, take the bus to the downtown station (with my bike in the bus' bike rack), then ride the rest of the way to work instead of taking a transfer bus. Should be a good workout round trip.

Here you go:  http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/bikemonth/

It's official!

Well I don't work Mondays.  Tuesday and Thursday are usually my days to pick up feed at the feed store and go grocery shopping and do other errands so that won't work.  But Wednesday and Friday are possibilities unless I swim before work.  Oh, I'm not a very good bike commuter am I?

Well, I think that if you can ride two days that it ougth to count.  I can not ride on Wednesday, but I'll consider it a plus if I can ride on the other four days.  Not sure how I'm going to manage the clothes thing but I'll figure it out.

I'm in... It's all rural to my business and I can make it any distance I want.

As for the clothes thing, I have a pond on our business property, so, as long as no one minds, I'll have a swim au naturel to cleanse and cool then off to work I go. I don't know why I didn't think of it before.

I wish I could ride to work.  But I live at least 45 miles from work so it's not possible.  But I'll ride during my lunch hour this week.

I'm planning my first bike commute this week. I'm terrified, but I'm going to do it. Since my bike is not setup for commuting, I'll bring extra clothes and lunch the day before in my car, so I can dress for cycling and not have to carry anything. Baby wipes and a fan will have to do for cleaning up and cooling down.

45 miles is longer than I would do, so I won't give you too hard a time, but its not impossible. Mine is about 13 miles each way.

Be safe everyone!

I have a 50 mile round trip commute, and I am currently working second shift, so the 25 mile ride home starts at 10:30. My plan is to do it M-W-F through the summer, and started a couple of weeks ago.

Friday is the Ride to Work day in Indianapolis, with a rally downtown, which I am volunteering at.

You folks with 50 mile commutes amaze me.  I did ride in this morning - all four miles.  Took about 15 minutes on the mtn bike, but it was wonderful.  There was a bit more traffic, but I only cross the major streets, other than that most of my ride is on neighboorhood streets.  I did see one other cyclist.

I kind of like the idea of a pond swim at work, unfortunately no pond in downtown Midland.   :-)

I am in for Friday . . .I would normally bike to work a lot more (only 12 mi), but the drivers here are terrible!  A group has gotten together from work to get a police escort starting a 0600 down the road, and I plan to meet up with them.

I don't have daycare duty on Thursdays and Fridays, so I bike into work (20 miles roundtrip) as long as the weather is decent. I feel very fortunate that the entire route is on a bike route (on stree) or bike path, plus I can shower at the gym on campus before heading into work. The added bonus is that on days that I go for a ride without my clothes, shoes, and lock on my back I feel like I'm flying.

Part of my job of working at a school for bad kids is riding the school bus with them and the bus company doesn't allow bikes on the bus. Sad. Otherwise I would have been riding to the bus stop long ago. I also get on in the morning and off in the afternoon in different parts of the city, so I can't just lock up the bike somewhere. I'll probably show up to work late so I can go to the rally downtown St. Paul though.

I just picked up my cars-r-coffins (http://www.carsrcoffins.com/) t-shirt too, which will be nice to wear that day.

I really hope once I finally start teaching, the school I work at will be close enough to bike to. I really don't want to have to buy another car for a two-person family. Yuck.

I rode again today.  I also wore clothes :-o.

so now this turns into a forum on clothed riding?  almost laughing out loud -- grinning for sure.

I work from 3 PM until 1:30 AM with a 12 mile ride each way.  I'm not too keen on riding home at that time, past all the bars that are just closing down!

Is there an alternate route that doesn't go right past the bars?

(You know you brought this on yourself by volunteering your excuse. Cool)

Is there an alternate route that takes you but the bars before they close?

BTW- I just got home from my bike commute.  17 miles each way.

Heh!  Yeah there probably is, by making the commute 25 miles instead of 12!  The thought of rolling in at 3 AM is not too appealing though!
