I've seen several comments about "increasing leg strength"? How do you increase leg strength for cycling purposes?

Here's one of my training aids for leg strength:

Dogs in the trailer

It's a nice way to travel when camping with the dogs.  It's better than driving everywhere.  And when riding bike trails, climbing hills and having fun it's also a great workout!

See Bear's post.

I also like doing one legged drills.

While "riding lots" will benefit your endurance and one legged cycling will perfect your cycling stroke, riding hills will go a long way to building power.  You could also do some leg specific weight training but be careful that you do not overdo it.  You do not want to build up your leg muscles too much.  Huge leg muscles are great for track cyclists and sprinters but not really desirable for triathletes.

Take a look at a training book such as "Training Techniques for Cyclists" by Ed Pavelka. This book is available for $2.24 at the following address:

Let's put it all together:
Ride lot's of hills AND push some big gears at a lower cadence.

Climbing some serious hills helps a lot and has the added benefit of making you feel as if you have NO leg strength which makes you feel as if you need to work on your leg strength more.

What he said... but do some rides with strength in mind: like hill repeats and charge up them. Or intervals in a harder gear where you really stamp and feel the burn.

and one leg squats too (off the bike).

You don't really need to charge up them, you wouldn't goto the weight room and "speed squat" as fast as you can.

Do some deliberately slow hill climbs with a low cadence (40-70) and a big gear. You have to be really careful of your knees when you do this. If you have any history of knee problems or pain, stay on the higer side of cadence, like 60-70. But it's not just pedaling slow, but pedaling slow in a hard gear. You need to have the sensation of siginficant "tension" in your leg muscles when donig these to get the benefit. Chris Carmichael calls them "Muscle Tension Intervals"

For a more advnaced technique, you can also do things like power starts. Start in a hard gear (53x18/20) from a stopped position and accelerate as fast & hard as you can until you feel like you are on top of the gear, then hold it for another 5-10 seconds. Rest for several minutes between these to get the most benefit, and stop when you no longer feel like you are generatingg maximum power at the start. (Might be only 2 or 3 the first time). Don't do these more than 1-2x per week.

Actually, speed squats are an advanced technique used to build power. Notice the term "advanced technique." If someone has no previous squatting background, don't do them.

Coach Troy of Spinervals fame has his victims trainees do stuff like wall sits (assume a squatting position with your back against the wall) for one minute at a time and squat jumps (IMO, a better way to build power than speed squats with weight) for 10, 15, all the way up to 20 reps. I've seen power-endurance programs for hockey players that recommended sets of 30 squat jumps. For the skinny guys, 30 squat jumps may be a piece of cake. If you're a Clydesdale, that's a serious workout.

Good point, we are talking about the difference between strength (how much force you can apply) and power (the rate of production of that force). I also described the power starts as an advanced technique.

"Increasing leg strength" is generally not a great concern for most triathletes.  Increasing endurance is.

So for (most) cycling purposes, bear's initial advice is pretty spot-on.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Good input! I have some planned long rides coming up supplemented by sessions on the trainer. So that will fit the advice provided. THANKS!

I think I have a body type issue working against me. Short muscular legs, longer upper body torso with built up shoulders due to lots of weightlifting over the years. If I go to 15% body fat by Vineman 70.3 (7/22/2007), I will still be at 196lbs at 5'8". I'm at 16.5% (hydrostatic weigh in) body fat right now. Whereas many of the faster triathletes are "gazelles", I'm more like a rhinoceros if I can use that analogy. Not real areodynamic in the water or the bike.

I'll have to look into the single leg drills, too. There might be a pedal stroke issue that I'm not aware of. I have found that many resolves to my triathlon event performance have been related to technique.

Again, THANKS for your feedback, input and suggestions!

Power starts are great fun!

Hill rides too...I used to somewhat avoid hills, now I design my rides trying to find the hardest steepest hills and make a circuit of hills...guess what I get hills better now...no real surprise. I just put together my hilly ride on the BT route tracker for tomorrow (it says 4544 feet in 20.63 miles which seems like more than it really is) ..should be tough but good for getting stronger.

I'm 5'9", currently at the top end of my 185-195 lb. range, closer to 20% body fat and, oh yeah, 52 years old. You're not limited by anything but your desire.

Cool

You are my twin brother separated at birth. I've taken part in similar discussions regarding strength training with people who have "crappy genetics" for building strength and size - essentially people who are built the exact opposite of us. After a couple years of traiing hard and proper nutrition, their genetics get a lot better.

The body is extremely adaptable. Obviously, certain things we cannot change, but as a general rule, if you train like an endurance athlete you will become one. And if some arrogant endurance athlete tells me I don't "belong" in endurance sports, I simple lift off the ground and commence doing overhead presses with him - for reps.

Hey MikeTheBear!

We might have the element of surprise in our favor. We might not look fast, but our sudden bursts of speed can overtake the unwitting. As for overhead presses ...... it might be a waste of time! Some of these guys out there are featherweights! 140lbs dripping wet! (LOL to all!)

(Out sprinted an Elite racer in Saturday's race......so what if he had done the long course and I did the short......... added some excitement for the announcer!!!!)
