Subject: Switching to morning running, need nutrition/stomach advice
I am attemping the switch to morning runs and have two problems I need help with.

1. My plan is to roll out of bed and hit the road within about 10 minutes. Is there any normal food I can eat that will benefit me in that short time period, or must I do a Gu or something?

2. Any advice on digestive issues? I am a pretty regular mid-morning (around 10 AM)bathroom goer. But I found myself about 10 minutes into the run (5:20 AM) needing the bathroom. Fortunately I was going by my local grocery store and could stop in. But I would like to avoid stopping. I also ended up with a pretty upset stomach at the end of my run (about 50 minutes in) and had to run/walk home to avoid a problem. Is this because I ate too much the night before? Anyone been in this situation and figured out how to change your schedule? I cannot do #2 on demand, or I would just go before I left the house.

I ate a banana this morning and sipped water as I went. I felt okay energy-wise, but the bathroom issues were bad. So that clearly isn't the answer, although maybe not related? I did have a big meal yesterday with Mother's Day celebrations, so maybe it's just a fluke.

Nutrition issues always confuse me, please help! Sorry it's a gross subject...

#1 - You shouldn't really need anything before a morning run.  I drink a glass of OJ (which is sort of like a "natural" gel) before all my am workouts though--habit as much as anything.

#2 - No real great advice.  I have similar issues once in awhile but most of the time I'm fine.  I seem to have become an "early morning" person (instead of my previous mid-morning) perhaps as a result of moving to consistent early am workouts.  So maybe it was just a fluke or maybe it will just take some transitioning.

First issue, I have a pretty bulletproof stomach so I'm not sure if this helps but:

Less then 1hr run I drink about 16oz of juice.  Anything over an hour I usually eat a cliff builder bar and some juice.

Second issue, my body seemed to retrain itself as I started getting up and moving earlier.  If it is something important, like a race the next  day, I'll lower my solid food intake after about 6pm the night before.

I also had the same problem about three months ago when I shifted from evening runs to morning runs. I have a banana and sip water too and have had to change dinner time to affect digestion and evacuation times. I now eat dinner at about 5:30 pm. This is easy to do for me as I am a High School Teacher and am home by 4:15 pm every day. I wake up, go to the bathroom, wash my hands, put on the running shoes and clothes, slow walk to wakeup/warmup, eat my banana, sip some water, and then slow jog the first mile. I do have to occasionally duck behind a tree to "water the grass". Other than that, my body has adjusted to the morning work out.
***For clarification-when the word "runs" is used in the above text, it is referring to the process of running for exercise. Not the restroom kind.***

Oh my - Morning Runs! Nice.

I was thinking maybe I would try not eating anything, or trying something to drink. I will try some OJ for sure and hope to naturally get used to the schedule.

First, train yourself to go the bathroom first thing in the morning...you'll feel much better on your runs, and it'll really help you out on race day.

Before heading out for morning runs, I have OJ and some toast with butter. I need to take in a lot more fuel and hydration on morning runs than I do on morning rides (well, short rides) and swims. For morning runs 45 mins or more, I always run with a fuel belt with H2O, gatorade, and a gel or two. Nutrition is really a personal thing. You'll figure out what you need after only a run or two.

Good luck and have fun !

A banana and water are my standard things to eat before an early morning run. If we are out of bananas, I will eat a gel or maybe part of a clif bar.

If you are consistently needing the bathroom 10 minutes in, you might schedule a short loop to start your run so that you are back home at that 10-minute mark.

As for everything else, I would say give your body some time to adapt to this new routine and see if your GI issues get better.

If your runs are around an hour or less, you should be fine. Drink plenty the day before and take off. Makes you look forward to getting back and eating that doughnut.......I mean, oatmeal!!

I do all my running in the morning, and find that a cup of coffee or two is great for flushing out the system. Of course, you can't do this if your "plan is to roll out of bed and hit the road within about 10 minutes." I'm up an hour before I hit the road, early morning is a good time to surf BT relax and get your thoughts together.

I'm an evening runner trying to make some sort of transition myself. I would try to eat very little prior to a light run. OJ make work for most here but it is hard to digest compared to other sugars; stick with water. One upside is that for many races I feel sick to my stomach from gues etc, so gettting used to it wont hurt you.

I prefer the morning runs, but I need the 45 minutes to an hour to get moving before heading out.  A little coffee, about 16 oz of h2o, and a banana is all I've needed even up to an hour and a half run.  But I need to let it settle a bit.  As far as the other issue, thats what the coffee helps with, either that or its just part of the waking process.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I wish I could get up earlier to wake up a little, but it's a small feat that I got up as early as I did

I recently made the switch. It takes me 20 minutes to get out the door, during which I drink a pint of water and eat an apple. Coffee is a treat for afterwards.

If the 10 minute jog gets you going, maybe you should run a 10 minute loop and return home. Use your own facilities and then head out again. After that 10 minute warmup, it might be a good time to consider some stretching too.
