NightOwl - 2007-05-20 2:55 PM Thong wearing granny=not tasteful. (I'm still on the fence if they're tasteful on anyone.

in my opinion, a thong is for private consumption, not public, even if the bod in question is totally hot.     flossing is not a public activity

I don't think there is an age that is too old. 25 is definitely way too young to stop wearing one. My wife is in her not early 30s and looks fantastic in a bikini. I would be really bummed if she stopped wearing one because of how old she is.

Wear it if you are comfortable in it.

Want my honest opinion?

Don't let anyone tell you what you can and cant' wear. I'm pretty chubby, but i'll be damned if I'll let someone (especially a man) tell me what I can and can't wear. If you don't feel comfortable in it, then ask yourself why? Is it because you don't like the way you look? or because you think *others* won't like the way you look. I say go for it.

(anyone else think it is a bit...sad? that we only talk about modesty in terms of women? There are no "modesty" gowns for men, nothing designed to "preserve their purity"...because heaven forbid we show a shoulder).

Age has nothing to do with it.  Believe me, I have been subjected to enough "biscuit" dough jeans overhang of the younger generation to know better.

If you have a good body you can get away with showing some skin in the appropriate setting, like a two piece swimsuit (when there is water involved, please), regardless of age.  If you look like the Stay Puft Marshmallow man, you are not going to look good and I don't care if you are 16, 18, 20, whatever, you don't get a pass.  It's just a bad visual.

Ok I'm gonna have to get a ruling from you guys on this when I get home. I've recently lost a ton of weight (so far about 62 lbs) and I have bought a bikini for this summer. Now we have a party to go to on Saturday and DH wants me to wear the bikini. I'm not sure I'm "ready" for it yet. Now, DH says yes, as long as I stand up straight (LOL) but I still see the fat girl when I look in the mirror so I'm not sure I can pull it off.

I'd like some honest opinions please. And don't feel the need to blow sunshine up my red bike, cause I don't need that. I need to know if I'm gonna be snickered at. As a former fat girl, I've had enough of the snickers to last a lifetime (double entendre intended).

I'll post a pic when I get home. Reassurance if I'm good to go or some constructive criticism if I still need to lose a few more before wearing it.

Now, don't everyone say wear it if you are comfortable and who cares what others think. As a former chubster, that's not a legit thing to say. Clearly, I care. I need opinions from people other than the one I'm married to.

thanks, I'll be home in about an hour...

Ok- tell me, is this a go or a no go for a pool party this weekend? And you won't hurt my feelings, if you say no go, really.

I do *not* want to be "that girl" that's wearing something she shouldn't...

Again, I will state, without judgment, that you can't go wrong with modesty (applies to both men and women of all ages and body types)

Edited to add: I posted this before the pic was up, so my advice is totally unrelated to the pic.

LOL, don't worry I saw that! Still, no one is gonna hurt my feelings, trust me. I figure cyber world is a much better testing ground than a party where I have no where to run and hide!

We have very similar physiques, Suzanne, and here's what I'd do in your shoes:

Wear it with a sarong over the bottom. That way, if you're feeling hypersensitive that day, you've got some coverage, but you're still showing off your fab self.

You look great, but sometimes that kind of weight loss can make you worried when you bare it. In your shoes, I personally might have a hard time enjoying myself and would be too busy thinking about glances, sucking in my last little bit... etc. If that's not what would go through your mind, go for it baby, cuz you've earned it.

So take that for what it's worth. Again, I think you look great.

Gotta run - pizza's here (and I wonder why I can't get rid of the last 5 pounds).

SuzanneS - that's a before pic and you're not that person any more. IMO go for your life .... and take a saraong in case you feel too self concious.

oh, you could always throw up a pic of you in a bikini now and we'll let you know what we think lol

Thanks- I love the chubster word too. I call all babies chubsters (cause they're cute when they're chubby!)

Like I said before, I see the before me in the mirror. I'm working on the courage for the party. Don't have a sarong. A cute pair of shorts maybe? We'll see. I've got 5 more days to obsess about it before we go...

Not trying to stir things up, but it seems to me that your response is critical of men. I am not offended at all, but there wasn't any mention in the OP or previous posts about any men trying to tell anyone what they could or couldn't wear.

Also, the thread isn't about "preserving purity" or NOT allowing women to wear what they like, so I don't understand the comments in your last paragraph that imply that anyone is trying to do so.

Actually, I just went back and checked - every male that posted voiced their support for the OP and said that she do whatever she liked.

Note: none of the below pertain to the OP

There was the comment (by a male) that "modesty is always appropriate". And also a comment that a tarp should be thrown over the scantily clad teenagers at the YMCA. Several comment about how overweight people or people who aren't fit should cover up. However, the comment in the last paragraph is critical of a larger trend, unrelated to the poster. Modesty is almost always linked to female sexuality, temptation, original sin, the need to hide the female form to prevent temptation of males, etc. It's a tradition that puts the burden for purity and moral uprightness on women. Note that there are infinitely many sights devoted to "modesty wedding gowns" but few for "modesty groom attire". Women wear coverups around the pool, while overweight men may wear speedos and the like with impunity (lifeguard, I've seen it all). The modesty thing gets to me because of that. I suppose I should apologize for the hijack.

And yes, my response is critical of men, and of anyone else who wishes to force a rather outmoded system of judgment on people. Notice that I said "someone (especially a man)". One because no one should hold that sway of you, but least of all a man, when it comes to a woman's body and her decisions of appropriateness. We spent way too much time under that system, and generally, it sucks.

My comments were about the judgment concept in general, slightly on the modesty topic. Here's my answers. I do not and will not make apologies for my (some would say) radical feminism and criticism of things I find to still be gender pandering.
